In a recent article with the UK’s Sun, TNA Impact Wrestling star and pro wrestling legend talked about his past history as a bassist and how he almost joined one of the biggest bands ever, “I used to be a session musician before I was a wrestler. I played bass guitar. I was big pals with Lars Ulrich and he asked me if I wanted to play bass with Metallica in their early days but it didn’t work out.”
We covered a Chicago Tribune article back in 2009 where Hogan talked a little more about the interaction, “When Metallica was looking for a bass player, I called and never heard a word back from them either. I would have quit wrestling in a heartbeat to be a bass player for Metallica.”
Skeptics will point out the slight differences in Hogan’s take between the two interviews, but it’s just semantics. Hogan is an old school wrestler that knows when making a statement seem more grand or low key is appropriate. Either way it looks like there was some interaction and thought put into Hogan joining Metallica from either his or their side way back when.
