BOSTON – Dustin Pedroia was speechless. Hours before the Boston Red Sox game Tuesday evening against the Baltimore Orioles, the star second baseman was milling around the locker room when “Nature Boy” Ric Flair walked right in, sporting a high-priced, hand-made suit and a replica World Heavyweight Championship belt.
Flair was bringing a gift — and good wishes — to one of his most high-profile fans. After all, Pedroia has an autographed Flair robe hanging above his locker here at Fenway Park.
Pedroia shared the Flair magic with many of his teammates, including Josh Reddick, Jacoby Elsbury and others. Pitcher Jonathan Papelbon even said Flair has to come back to town for the World Series, if they make it.
Flair stayed with Pedroia and the Red Sox, smiling and truly making a ball player’s day, if not his week or month. Then Flair ventured on the field here at one of the most famous stadiums in all of sports.
Flair was interviewed before the game by the Boston Herald, and also photographed on the field by the paper. Plus, every local news affiliate interviewed Flair. The CBS affiliate even had Flair live during their broadcast.
Flair also was interviewed by ESPN and introduced the Red Sox lineup for NESN.
Then came a truly magical moment: Flair was walked to left field, where he was taken inside the famous Green Monster.
Flair’s appearance in Boston also was appreciated by the visiting Orioles as many Baltimore players walked over to Flair for a photo, including Chris Davis and longtime wrestling fan Denny Hocking. Many of the Orioles also sent long-distance “Wooo’s” and make-shift struts to Flair. Naturally, he responded with the same.
