With his long sideburns and his hair slicked back the Honkytonk Man was one of the biggest and most recognisable stars of the WWF in the 80’s. The greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time has also become known for his shoot interviews in recent years, which is why, after four years, it came as no real surprise that he returned to the Kayfabe Commentaries studio (or rather hotel room) for the latest in their YouShoot series.
Now I’ve never seen Honky’s first YouShoot release, but from what I hear it was quite interesting, and having read about his current views on the wrestling business I was eager to see what the man had to say.
He didn’t disappoint. With Sean Oliver posing the questions set by you, the fans, he held nothing back. No matter what the question he gave honest and open answers, putting over a few of the people he worked with, and putting down a few others as well.
There’s also the usual games. It came as no surprise that, once again, Missy Hyatt’s name made it into the Ho Bag, while certain others made it into the Dick Bag. I won’t describe that particular item, just in case there’s a few kids reading this.
But perhaps what was most surprising was the appearance of one Perry Saturn as he posed a question via video. I heard the guy was dead (or in hiding trying to avoid paying child maintenance or something).
The really interesting part though is the question put to him about putting younger talent over on the independent circuit. His continued refusal to do this, saying that he doesn’t want to damage his career, really speaks volumes. Most of the time he comes across as a likeable and personable chap. When he talks about protecting his career and image he comes across as slightly insecure, as someone who forgets about the people who put him over during the formative years of his career.
Overall this is a really good release, and it’s nice to see Kayfabe Commentaries going back to doing what they do best after the disappointing Wrestling’s Most Controversial Moment release. This is the sort of thing Sean and his crew should continue to do, and it’s why this gets the big thumbs up from this particular writer.
