Today is the four year anniversary of the birth of the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. The morning of May 13th, 2007 the National Wrestling Alliance severed it’s agreement with TNA allowing TNA to be in control of the alliances World Heavyweight Title.
TNA originally signed a financial agreement with the NWA to control the title in an effort to bring some name recognition to the upstart company.
According to many sources the NWA learned that TNA planned to sever the agreement and launch their own world title later in the year and the NWA preemptively canceled the agreement the morning of the 2007 Sacrifice PPV in a publicity move. The NWA claimed it was because then Champion Christian Cage would not defend the belt in the various Indy promotions they controlled.
Of course TNA Wrestling has since then went on to bigger and bigger fame and the NWA has faded into obscurity a shadow of the once former famous alliance.
