Always for one for a bargain, I popped into my local branch of Poundland recently. In the past they’ve come up with some gold in the form of martial arts and kickboxing DVDs, as well as the occasional cheesy science fiction and monster movie.
But even I was mildly surprised when I stumbled into the book section and saw two gems. One was the hardback edition of Chris Jericho’s “A Lion’s Tale. The other was Mick Foley’s “The Hardcore Diaries”.
It’s been out a few years, so you should all know the premise, but if you don’t it was basically Foley writing about he events leading up to the second ECW One Night Stand show in 2006, and the match where he teamed with Edge and Lita against Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer and Beulah.
I remember reading some online reviews when this was first release, and they weren’t exactly that complimentary. Okay, this may not be the best of Foley’s WWE-related biographies, but it’s still a pretty good read.
It’s interesting to read how the idea of the match developed, how Foley’s original concept and ideas were radically changed, and how our protagonist became increasingly frustrated with Vince McMahon and the creative team as the match got closer and closer.
There are forays into other parts of Foley’s life. He’s not afraid to write about some of the most personal aspects of his existence, and of how his relationship with his boss changed over the years.
So in all this is a really good read. Foley’s writing style is easy to comprehend and enjoy, and once again you get the feeling that he’s written the book just for you, that he’s sitting with you and engaging in an entertaining conversation.
Mick Foley’s Hardcore Diaries definitely gets the thumbs up, and it’s well worth the money I spent, all £1 of it!
But if you live in Norwich don’t go back to Poundland to see if they’ve got any more copies left. I got the last one!
