Aunt Thelma’s Derby pick, Ice Box, finished second, and after cashing her place bet, she bought a new one.
And speaking of finishing second, unlike Ice Box – who was catching up to Super Saver at the end of the race – TNA’s “Impact” has been running a distant second to “Raw” in the Monday night rating race, so TNA announced the race is over.
“Impact” will return to Thursdays beginning next week (9 p.m., Spike TV).
TNA president Dixie Carter came up with a classic case of turning a negative into a positive by saying, “Our fans have made it clear that they preferred the Thursday night time period. It’s a win/win opportunity for TNA and its fans.”
It didn’t take a mathematician to see the move to Monday was a lose/lose situation. The initial Monday special “Impact” on Jan. 4, hyping the return of Hulk Hogan, drew a 1.4 – and that should have been a warning because “Raw” still outdrew it. Plus, Thursday’s “Impact” was averaging 1.6 without Hogan. Then, on March 4, TNA officially entered the race for Monday night supremacy against “Raw” and in the weeks that followed – in spite of adding Hogan, Ric Flair, Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam – it never once grabbed the lead from “Raw.”
In another move, “ReACTION” will debut June 24 at 8 p.m., as a lead-in to “Impact,” focusing on TNA characters and story lines.
