The post-Mania SmackDown opened with Chris Jericho, who retained his Heavyweight title, coming out in a full suit. We were informed he wasn’t in the best mood. Grisham and Striker ran down how he used his belt as a weapon to beat Edge and how Edge got some revenge on the night which is why Jericho’s upset.
Good heat for Jericho as he said he was the best in the world at what he does. He said he wrestled a perfect match at Mania to prove he was the greatest champion of this generation and every other. Big “you suck” chant. He then talked about Edge’s cowardly act of attacking him after the match, spearing his through the boards. He said as he lay, an innocent victim, all he could hear was 70 thousand hypocrites chanting ‘spear’. He said he realises it’s because the fans are just like Edge – losers. He said he wouldn’t say I told you so, but that “it is so”.
Edge’s music hit and he got a really good reaction. Edge said Jericho was right, that he and the fans did have a lot in common – the love of watching him get speared. He said they’d love to see it again tonight. Edge said he wanted a rematch right then. Jericho said Edge doesn’t hold the cards, that he had his chance and lost. Jericho said that puts him at the back of the line. Really good fire from Jericho telling him to get out of the ring. Edge snapped and decked him before ripping off Jericho’s shirt to reveal his ribs all taped up. Edge hit the big DDT and then called for the spear and nailed it.
As Edge left the ring, Swagger ran down and took him out with the briefcase to the head. He got on the mic and called for a ref.
Match Number One: Chris Jericho Vs. Jack Swagger, World Heavyweight title match.
Jericho was still motionless on the mat, as the ref cleared the ring and Swagger demanded the bell be rung. The second the bell rang Swagger hit the Doctor Bomb and got the pinfall.
Winner: Jack Swagger, New World Heavyweight Champion.
Crowd popped huge for the pinfall and continued to cheer when he raised the belt. Edge was still down in the isle when Swagger walked passed, the two locked eyes for a second and Edge had no idea what to make of it all. Great opening.
After the break we saw a video of the spear and Swagger taking Edge out on the ramp and pinning Jericho. Grisham told us that this was the fastest anyone had ever cashed in the Mitb briefcase when R-Truth’s music hit.
Match Number Two: R-Truth & John Morrison Vs. Cryme Tyme.
Truth immediately hit the scissor kick, tagged in Morrison who hit the Star Ship Pain and this was over in less than 20 seconds. JTG stood on the apron holding his head in disbelief.
Winners: John Morison & R-Truth, Pinfall.
JTG helped Shad up and the two exchanged words. Shad put his hands on JTG who didn’t like it so Shad hit him with a big boot. Shad picked him up and laid in a few big knees before flattening him with a right hand. The ref tried to get him out of the ring but Shad picked up JTG again for and big STO.
Swagger was shown walking in the back with his new title over his shoulder and stopped by Slam Masta J and Mickie James. He then passed Shelton and said that maybe he should be called the gold standard now then walked off.
After an adbreak we were again shown the end of the tag match and the end of Cryme Tyme. Matthew was in the back with Shad who stopped him to say that there was no Cryme Tyme, this was his time.
Match Number Three: Drew McIntyre Vs. Matt Hardy – never started.
Drew attacked Matt as he was getting in the ring, before the bell rang. He threw Hardy into the ring post and then gave him the Future Shock in the ring. He grabbed his IC belt, raised it high and left.
We saw another replay of Swagger’s win. They’re playing it after every adbreak, so if anyone is surfing and comes in they won’t miss it.
This time we saw footage of Jericho after he recovered. He tore the top off of the announcer’s table before throwing a chair at the ring. Finally he threw the briefcase. We then saw a video package on Shawn. Very touching.
Vickie was in the back with Michelle and Layla, talking about how amazing Wrestlemania was. Vickie did say that she was upset people were saying “hog splash” instead of frog. McCool said it should be the cougar splash. Swagger walked in and all three girls clapped. He asked if they’d seen Long and Vickie said that he doesn’t need Teddy that she can help. Swagger asked for a chance for a state of Championship address. Vickie said he could have all the time he wanted. Swagger went to leave but stopped to give Vickie a little kiss on the cheek. He was very solemn through the segment, but is coming off like a star.
Match Number Four: The Great Khali w/ Ranjin Vs. Dolph Ziggler.
Dolph slid outside as soon as the bell rang and tried to avoid Khali by running the ropes but ate a chop to the head. Dolph got to the top turnbuckle and got Khali in the sleeper but was thrown head over tail. Khali was affected though and Dolph locked it on again straight away, this time on the ground with the hooks in. Khali actually kicked the ropes a few times but the ref didn’t see it and eventually passed out to the hold.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler, Ref Stoppage.
Khali was looking dejected on the floor of the ring. He got a mic and talked into it for a minute before Ranjin said that Khali has done some soul searching and it’s time to go back home to India, spend time with family and regroup. He said when he returns he will become world champion. This got no reaction.
Punk came out with the SES. Punk requested this time to issue a challenge to Mysterio. Gallows took the mic and told the people to open their ears. He said Punk could save them all. He said the time for change was here and now. Punk took the mic then wouldn’t speak. Serena took the mic and told the fans to show respect, saying Punk was perfect in every way. She said if it weren’t for Punk, the SES would be just like the fans.
Punk finally spoke saying that if ever there was a city in need of saving, it was Las Vegas. He said he envied all those at home for simply not being there. He said that what happened in Vegas stayed in Vegas was a lie. The whole town was a lie, just like Rey Mysterio. He said he was supposed to save Rey, but he was still out there lying to himself. He said Rey needed straight edge, he needs CM Punk. He said he would not give up on Rey, asking Mysterio for a rematch. He said he was willing to sacrifice to get it to happen. He offered something free of foreign chemicals, that represents his purity, his position as leader of the SES. Punk said should he lose this one match, he will sacrifice his hair – which got a nice little pop. Punk said that’s how much he cares about Rey.
Match Number Four: Michelle McCool (c) & Layla w/ Vickie Vs. Tiffany & Beth Phoenix.
Tiffany started with McCool and the women’s champion controlled her easily. Layla came in for a little double team. Layla continued to control Tiffany still she got the hot tag to Beth who ran wild on Layla. She went after McCool who dropped off the apron. She went back to Layla, hitting an aeroplane spin and Glam Slam for the pin.
Winners: Beth Phoenix & Tiffany, Pinfall.
Vickie wasn’t happy and talked a little smack to Phoenix from the outside.
Teddy was shown watching from his office and turned around into an upset Chris Jericho. He demanded Long reverse the decision and return his title. Long said he was out of his mind and offered him a rematch tonight. Jericho said he was hurt after WrestleMania. Long said if he didn’t want the match they had nothing to discuss. Jericho said he was the champion and stormed off.
After the break we saw some WrestleMania stills of Bret v Vince.
In the back Matthews introduced the Hart Dynasty, who were all wearing creepy cheesy smiles. Natalya said they couldn’t be happier with their opportunity at the tag titles. Smith said it was an honour to be at the HOF for Stu and a privilege to be in Bret’s corner against Vince. Tyson said it was their time to carry on the tradition. In walked Swagger who held up his title to take up the whole frame. There were some really creepy eerie smiles in that promo.
Match Number Five: Kane Vs. NXT.
Kane came out and said he was getting bored and frustrated. He said he needed someone to take the frustration out on. He had a big shiner. He said the more the merrier, so tonight he would take on the entire NXT roster.
Daniel led the way down the ramp. He was also the one to start as all seven other rookies stood on the apron. Daniel hit a few leg kicks, ducked a clothesline, ducked a boot and landed some good strikes. Kane came back with a slam and in came Darren Young. Young avoided a charge in the corner but was continually thrown before Wade Barrett stop[ed Gabriel from having a turn to get in himself. Barrett hit a cheap shot with Kane’s attention turned but ate a boot to the face and was pinned.
Wade Barrett was eliminated.
Skip came in and was slammed but Slater had gotten a blind tag. Heath was caught off the middle rope and chokeslammed.
Heath Slater eliminated.
Michael Tarver attacked Kane from behind and was thrown over the top rope. In came Otunga who had looked scared on the apron the whole time. He exited the ring and the rookies all jumped off the apron to a huddle outside. Crowd booed them. They said they’d all circle and attack at once. Kane took out two before Bryan got his back. He continued to swat rookies away but eventually the sleeper kicked in and they all beat down on Kane. Ref called for the bell.
Winner: Kane, DQ.
They continued to beat on Kane after the bell and Bryan nailed a top rope dropkick. They all held him down for Gabriel’s 450 splash. Kane struggled up the ramp after them and they all ran like little children.
They again showed the opening segment. Swagger then came out for his State of Championship Address. Swagger said this would be the first of many addresses he’d be giving. He had prepared a few statements: he congratulated everyone on being a part of history. He said he was going to be champion for an extremely long time and he wanted silence till the speech was over. He continued reading his statement, a biography of his life which the crowd bood. He said they had found the replacement for Michaels as the greatest wrestler on the planet. Jericho’s music cut him off.
Jericho still had the tape on, still no shirt. Jericho told him to give “it” back, referring to the title. Swagger said it was his now. Jericho said he was the champion, not Jack. Jericho was losing it and was great. He said Swagger was so lucky Jericho was injured. Swagger looked huge next to Jericho. Out came Edge.
Edge told Swagger to show what kind of champion he is and face him. Edge said Swagger wouldn’t be champion if not for Edge, and while he appreciates Mitb he should face someone not injured and not scared to face him. Jericho said Edge had no right to request the match to which Edge replied that he hit Jericho with the two spears that caused him to no longer be champion so shut your mouth.
Teddy Long came out to the ramp and said Jericho has a rematch but doesn’t want it. Jericho want’s it but doesn’t have it. So next week will be Edge vs Jericho to determine the number one contender. Swagger went to attack Edge from behind who had it scouted but turned into a Code Breaker. Swagger then nailed the Doctor Bomb on Jericho, then another on Edge to end the show standing tall with his title.
