Finally, pro wrestling will come back to Timmins.
More specifically, BSE Pro will invade the McIntyre Arena and present Gold Rush 2010 — its version of Wrestlemania.
Just one match for the April 16 card has been confirmed, but it’s not one the fans of Timmins will want to miss, BSE Pro co-owner Mike Patry said. Tyson Dux and El Tornado will go toe to toe in a steel cage match.
“We’re going to complete that feud that’s been going on,” Patry said. “They’ve had bull rope matches, last-man standing matches and that kind of stuff, so let’s lock them up in a cage.”
The rivalry between the former tag team partners was launched in Timmins when Dux assaulted El Tornado following a match. Since then, the two have headlined BSE Pro events competing in a variety of matches, but there will be “finality to the feud,” Patry said.
Helping usher in the steel cage will be wrestling legend Kevin Nash. The six-time world champion of WCW, WWE and now TNA fame will make an appearance, though it hasn’t been confirmed if he’ll step in the ring.
“He’ll do whatever he wants,” Patry said.
“Kevin Nash has wanted to come here with the likes of Christian, Kurt Angle and those guys highly talking about the fans here. It was clear that Kevin Nash needed to make an appearance at one of these (events).”
TNA’s Scott D’Amore, Robbie McAllister — who is best known for being one half of The Highlanders — and members of All Japan Pro Wrestling will also join the BSE Pro talent for Gold Rush.
BSE Pro will put on the show in conjunction with the Schumacher Lions Club. The two parties decided on the McIntyre Arena as the site for Gold Rush to continue a tradition that has fell to the wayside in recent years.
“Because it’s the 100th year of the city and the 75th year of the club, they wanted to highlight some of our heritage and they thought wrestling at The Mac has always been part of our heritage with Northland Wrestling being here, AWA and international wrestling,” Patry said. “All these events occurred at The Mac.
“We had (Hulk) Hogan vs. Andre the Giant. We’ve had the great Édouard Carpentier wrestle at The Mac. We’ve had Rick Martel and all these guys come through The Mac, but we haven’t seen a very strong wrestling presence here (recently).”
BSE Pro held a number of events in Timmins in 2009 and has a local fan base. By holding the company’s biggest show at The Mac, however, wrestling in the area may become as big of a hit as it was in the 1980’s, said Patry, who “was raised on those shows.”
“I remember being afraid of the heels,” he said. “I’ll always remember that Sheik Ali scared the bejeezus out of me. I asked him for an autograph and he scared me back to my seat.
“Stuff like that, just sticks with you. BSE, as well as the Schumacher Lions Club, wants to do that again. We want to give back.”
The wrestling event will also serve as a fundraiser for all Schumacher Lions Club projects. Tickets will go on sale soon.
“The birth of The Mac is pretty much tightly linked to the birth of wrestling in Timmins,” Patry said.
“We’re going to (bring wrestling back) in grand fashion.”
