SmackDown kicked off with a video running down Rey’s win over Batista for a shot at Taker’s title and the match that ensued which saw Batista interrupt the contest and a three way brawl. The teacher informed us with graphics that Teddy had set up a beat the clock challenge tonight to find Taker’s opponent for the Royal Rumble.
CM Punk came out with his Slammy and Gallows. Sitting on the top turnbuckle Punk asked the crowd about new year’s resolutions, and how many have already broken theirs? Talked about how they’re meant to make yourself better, which is why he doesn’t need to make them. He then tried to lead a pledge about living a straight edge lifestyle in 2010. Warned the audience to not make him beat his message into them. He said that next week he would save a soul from the audience, and would do so in each city. Punk was really on tonight.
Beat the Clock #1: CM Punk w/ Luke Gallows Vs. Matt Hardy.
Clock was placed on the bottom left of the screen and Titantron, which both wrestlers gave glances to.
Hardy controlled the first few two minutes after Punk went for a quick cover. Punk went for a springboard after rolling to the apron but was met with a punch to the gut on the way down for a nearfall. Grisham called Punk a “Jiu Jitsu Master” after he kicked Hardy in the back.
Hardy was pushed away when looking for his bulldog then ate a kick to the back of the head for another two count. At the five minute mark Punk applied a chin lock. Backdrop by Hardy breaks the hold followed by a running clothesline for two and he then successfully hit the bulldog out of the corner for two. Side Effect for Hardy got another two and he called for the Twist of Fate. Punk made the ropes before he could hit it and the ref separated them. Punk used the distance to hit a head kick, then the GTS to set the clock at 7.20.
Winner: CM Punk, Pinfall.
Time: 7mins 20seconds
Gallows checked on Punk then went to work on Hardy, hitting the Gas Mask before celebrating with Punk over the fallen Hardy.
Beat The Clock #2: Kane Vs. Dolph Ziggler, time to beat: 7 mins 20 (Punk).
They put over Dolph’s history of college wrestling, meaning he was used to facing the clock. Clock now starts at 7.20 and counts down.
Started with wrestling as Ziggler shot for a single leg which Kane successfully sprawled, eventual getting on top. Ziggler stopped the back and forth with shots to Kane’s knee. He would wrench it, then quickly look for a pin. Big clothesline by Kane stopped the assault on his knee before picking him up for a delayed vertical suplex for two. Kane then hit his running dropkick to the seated Ziggler for another two. Ziggler countered a backdrop with a big DDT as Punk was shown to be watching with Gallows in the back.
Lots of nearfalls every time someone went down. Ziggler got a close 2 after hitting the fame-asser with about 4 minutes left on the clock. Kane back with a big boot to the head for two, then hit his sidewalk slam for another two at 2.10. Kane showing frustration at not getting three and climbed the top rope. Ziggler met hit up top but was pushed away at 1.20 and with hit with the top rope clothesline at 1.10 but only got 2.
Ziggler avoided a chokeslam before jumping on Kane’s back and applying a sleeper while Kane still stood. Ziggler with the hooks in and Kane couldn’t shake him as both watched the clock. Kane on his back with 10 seconds to go. Crowd counted down the time as Kane wouldn’t tap.
Winner: Clock.
After the buzzer, Kane got back to his feet and an angry Dolph hit the Zig Zag as Kane watched the big screen.
A long Raw rebound focused on Cena and Sheamus.
Match Number Three: The Carolina Panther (bald man in red jocks and Panthers’ jersey) Vs. The Great Khali without Ranjin, Non-Clock match.
The Panther looked intimidated as Khali entered before taking a three point stance and charging at an unmoving Khali. Khali picked him up, Tree Slammed him, then covered him with a boot for three.
Winner: The Great Khali, Pinfall.
Match Number Four: John Morrison Vs. Drew McIntyre (c), IC title match.
Fast start with Morrison being all out attack. Morrison hit a clothesline to send Drew to the outside, then followed him. He climbed the barricade twice, first hitting a twisting dive that Drew avoided. Morrison landed on his feet though, climbed again and hit a moonsault. As Morrison entered the ring, Drew caught him with a boot to the head. As Morrison fell backwards his foot got caught in the middle and bottom rope, leaving him dangling upside down, his head a few inches off the ground is a really good looking spot.
Drew jumped outside and kicked at the trapped leg while the ref tried to free Morrison. Back in the ring Drew worked away at the now damaged limb. Morrison hit a kip up as Drew held his leg, then hit an enziguri which looked great. Morrison continued the comeback with a Pele Kick, selling the leg the whole time. Morrison nailed his springboard kick, but hesitated before jumping and only used only leg to springboard.
Drew hit a backbreaker out of a tilt-a-whirl, then removed a turnbuckle. Morrison cut him off and beat down on him in the corner. Ref separated them but Morrison got free and continued, this happened twice more before the ref warned Morrison, demanding he listened to him. Morrison said ok but Drew shoved Morrison into the ref as he picked up the fallen turnbuckle, so the ref called for the bell.
Winner: Drew McIntyre, DQ.
Drew grabbed his belt and walked up the ramp as Morrison tried to explain the ref what happened and we saw a replay. Morrison then ran up the aisle and attacked Drew. They both brawled, sharing top position. A bunch of referees eventually managed to hold Morrison back.
Match Number Five: Beth Phoenix Vs. Mickie James, Michelle McCool & Layla at ringside.
I hate this. At least McCool isn’t on commentary this week. Layla’s shirt read “We *heart* Glamazon” while McCool’s read “Mickie James *heart* Food” while both wore headbands like Phoenix’s.
Beth countered Mickie twice before Mickie hit a top rope Thesz Press for two. Layla then immediately got on the apron to distract the ref. Beth then pushed Mickie into the ropes where McCool was also climbing the apron. Mickie blocked Beth, so McCool threw a headkick but missed James and hit Phoenix. Mickie then got the roll up for the victory.
Winner: Mickie James, Pinfall.
Layla and McCool then took out Mickie after the bell but Beth pulled McCool off as they were pummelling her. Beth drove McCool into the corner as Mickie took care of Layla. James and Phoenix shared glances as each disposed of a girl each. A little low five was shared between them before Phoenix hit the Glam Slam on Mickie to be the only Diva standing.
Beat The Clock #3: Chris Jericho Vs. Rey Mysterio, time to beat: 7 mins 20 (Punk).
Jericho took the mic before Rey came out, saying SmackDown isn’t big enough for Jericho. He’s bigger than the show, the fans and the WWE. He guaranteed winning the belts with the Show, allowing him to go on to be the face of Raw, Superstars, ECW, On Demand, Classics, the entire company. He said his new year’s resolution will be to win every championship in the WWE, starting tonight as he beats Rey in record time before going on to become a 6 time WWE Champion at the Rumble.
Jericho met Rey with a boot to start. Rey then got going but Jericho again cut him off. Jericho threw Rey to through the ropes, bumping on his stomach. Jericho celebrated, thinking Rey would be counted out. Punk again shown watching in the back. Rey beat the count, entering with a springboard cross body.
Jericho back to picking Rey apart but a kick by Rey set up Jericho for the 619 at the 4.40 mark. As Rey was running the ropes to deliver it Jericho walked at him hitting an awesome backdrop. Rey hit a drop toe hold onto a charging Jericho who hit his head on the middle turnbuckle. Mysterio then climbed up top and hit a head but to a standing Jericho for 2.
Springboard cross body by Rey gets another two. Rey went for a shining wizard but Jericho caught the knee and looked to turn it into the Walls of Jericho. Mysterio powered out before it was applied but Jericho hit a spinning lucha back breaker. Armstrong having an off night as ref getting in weird positions during pinfalls.
Jericho in position for the 619 caught the legs and sunk in the Walls at 1.04. Rey rolled through, keeping his legs up at Jericho’s head and used the position to rana Jericho into the 619 which he hit with 40 seconds to go. He jumped for the springboard at 30 seconds but with caught with a code breaker in mid air. Both men down.
Jericho crawled over to Rey and covered at 17 seconds. Kickout. Jericho arguesd. Small package by Rey at the 4 second mark, Ref’s hand falls for the third time with two seconds on the clock.
Winner: Rey Mysterio, Pinfall.
Time: 7mins 19seconds.
Beat The Clock #4: R-Truth Vs. Batista, Time to beat 7.19 (Mysterio), Rey Mysterio at ringside.
Batista over powered Truth at the start but was rolled up out of the corner for two. Truth then hit a legdrop to the back of Batista’s head. Batista turned things around quickly with a big clothesline. Lots of little glances by Batista to both the clock and Rey.
Batista took too long looking at Rey while having Truth waiting for a Batista Bomb. Instead, Truth landed a kick to the head which sent Batista outside, then quickly followed him with a dive. Back in the ring at 4.10.
Truth never made it all the way in as Batista cut him off and drove his shoulder into the steel pole, then into the steel steps back outside. A black hole slam inside the ring ended a small comeback by Truth that consisted on a few punches and a dropkick.
Batista now stalking, but ate a big DDT for 2, 1.50 left. Truth hit his spinning axe kick for another two. Truth up top but missed a dropkick. Batista took the time then to stare down Rey before hitting a spear with 50 seconds left. Batista taking his time, not even trying to pin Truth. Spine buster at 30 seconds, still no cover attempt. Batista Bomb at ten seconds, pin at six. Rey pulled the ref out of the ring as he countered and the buzzer went off, signalling the end of the match.
Winner: Clock.
Rey was announced as the New Number One Contender as Batista shook the ropes in anger. A replay of the finish was shown, highlighting Batista’s lack of pin attempts.
Vickie came out and apologised to Rey, but said that SmackDown follows the rules and it’s clear that Rey just cheated Batista. She said as Official Consultant, she’s advising Rey to take on Batista to determine the new number one contender, thus leaving this entire show as obsolete and a waste of everyone’s time.
