As reported on earlier, Batista underwent surgery on his biceps today and is expected to be out of action for at least four months according to WWE. The Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online reports that WWE might be interested in keeping him out of action slightly longer than that time frame which would put his return time to around January 2010 near the Royal Rumble PPV.
For those wondering why WWE made the decison to put the WWE Championship on Batista if they were aware he suffered an injury going into the Extreme Rules PPV, The Figure Four Weekly Newsletter is reporting that the company put a lot into building up a storyline of Batista chasing Orton all the way to their Steel Cage match at the PPV and Vince McMahon wanted a clean finish. So they decided they shouldn’t have Batista lose again and they went with the clean finish on Sunday.
Batista is still being listed as WWE Champion by the company, but will be requiring surgery for what was confirmed as a completely torn left bicep that will keep him out for an estimated four months. WWE is promoting next week’s three-hour Raw as the “3-For-All” where three championship defenses will take place involving the WWE Championship, WWE World Heavyweight Championship and ECW Championship. This obviously leaves the WWE Title defense in question with Batista scheduled for surgery.
The expectation is that an angle of some kind will go down on next week’s Raw explaining the status of the WWE Title.
