HOUSTON — The Undertaker kept his legendary streak alive against Shawn Michaels before 72,744 fans in Reliant Stadium at World Wrestling Entertainment’s silver anniversary of WrestleMania.
The battle of heaven and hell featuring two WrestleMania icons ended with Undertaker catching Michaels into a second tombstone piledriver. Taker improved to 17-0 at Mania. The superhuman effort displayed by these two veterans exemplified the magnitude of the event and why the biggest spectacle in sports entertainment is truly the showcase of the immortals.
Michaels worked on Undertaker’s leg throughout the match. The Undertaker unleashed his power on the Heartbreak Kid. Michaels went through a variety of submissions to wear the Deadman down, including a crossface. Late in the match, Undertaker answered Michaels’ superkick and figure-four combination with his hell’s Gate Triangle Choke.
Mr. WrestleMania crashed and burned after a moonsault attempt on Undertaker. Michaels pulled a cameraman in the line of fire as Undertaker dove over the ropes in a move meant for Michaels.
With his opponent and cameraman knocked out on the outside, Michaels made the referee try to count out Undertaker. The Undertaker rebounded with a chokeslam on Michaels. Shortly after, Michaels hit Undertaker with Sweet Chin Music but only got two.
The Undertaker brought out his Last Ride powerbomb from his old playbook, as well as a tombstone piledriver, but Michaels still kicked out, and Taker could not believe it.
A second tombstone attempt was turned into a DDT by HBK. Another superkick by Michaels did not finish the Undertaker. The Showstopper could not block the final nail in the coffin — a second tombstone. The crowd went into a frenzy as a loud roar erupted for Taker.
Before the match, Michaels, wearing white, was lowered from a podium to start his entrance on the rampway. Taker, wearing block, rose from underneath the platform.
