Yes, I did just start this out with a Michael Jackson reference. It’s okay though we’re talking about loveable Michael not….well I’ll let you insert your own punchline there. Okay enough with that because I’m here to give my thoughts on the previous Monday Night RAW. RAW had a bunch of high points and maybe a few not as high moments but I won’t nitpick at it. It was the end however that really got excited. However, we we’ll save that for the end as I will go down in chronological order.
So to start off the show we had the match that, quite honestly, I was looking foward to all week. CM Punk vs The World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Jericho, in a Cage match. On paper, how could you not be pumped for this one. Two exciting and technically sound wrestlers going at it with four walls of cage surrounding them. And, as we got further into this match, the anticipation built up. I loved to see these two crawling over each other attempting to crawl out. You never really see that in cage matches. One guy will try to crawl out while the other man holds onto his foot in attempt to drag him back. Besides that though I got to tell ya, this lacked a certain level of excitement that a steel cage championship match should have. I mean they barely used the cage as a weapon. Also, there really wasn’t any moments of the match where something big happened. You could argue that electric chair drop the Punk executed on Jericho, but you do see that move in normal matches so I don’t consider it that big. The ending on the other hand was a good way to go. They are still showing the effects that the match with Shawn Michaels had on Chris Jericho. So all in all, not a bad way to start but not an amazing way either.
Later in the night, we saw a squash match between Tommy Dreamer and JBL. Now because this was a squash, I won’t talk about the match itself. It was the events that preceding that I felt were brilliantly done. As far as JBL on the mic, I am annoyed when he goes his preaching and begging way. He his far more entertaining when he is frustrated and demanding. Whenever Randy Orton makes an apperance now, I turn into a little girl upon the arrival of The Jonas Brothers. Yep that right, screaming and jumping. All joking aside, I felt that this little dispute between the two was alright, but any intensity was immediately sucked out right away. That’s a good thing though, because down came Glamarella. Now Santino here…well needless to say he doesn’t exactly fit in. His mic work though was fantastic as always. Really cutting down on Orton to the point where I was just waiting for Orton to attack, you could see it in his eyes. But hold on a second, because Batista is the last man to come out. Lately, I don’t know, I think when it comes to Batista’s dialouge, the creative team can get a little lazy. Their is always one line that sounds something like ” I’m done talking, I’m just going to kick the crap out of you.” It kind of shows that he is not really the main focus on RAW, like I thought he would be when he was drafted. Maybe it will take some time, we’ll see. Adamle delivers another sub-par acting job, but he gets the main point across. The number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship will be named later.
Now I have one question to be answered. What went wrong for Charlie Haas? When he was brought into the WWE along with Shelton Benjamin under Kurt Angle, these were two promising young men who had a promising future. Instead Benjamin is almost at that main event status and Haas is the Gimmick Machine. Constantly given these terrible meaningless gimmicks which nobody could ever pull off. However I will give credit to him on a couple things. One, he does what he is told without any arguing. Two, for a ridiculous basis of a gimick, he still does a pretty good job with these impressions. His best was probably his JBL one to me, but the Good Ol’ JR was a nice little comic relief. No match to Santino but not bad, not bad.
This William Regal/Jamie Noble conflict has somewhat grabbed my attention. Normally if these two were to wrestler, I wouldn’t feel the need to watch. Last monday we saw Layla turn heel after her three week sort of face run. Now a couple of things that happened after the match dissapointed me. First off, the thought of William Regal in a romantic relationship is a little weird and creepy to think about. Second, the fact that it is with Layla is even more creepy. It’s like Beauty and the Pee Drinking Beast.
Quick note I thought I should mention. We finally got to see Lance Cade in a match. If of course by match I am refering to being shoved into a door. Honestly, let’s make use to the fact that he split away from Trevor Murdoch, went under the wing of the World Heavyweight Champion and get this guy in the ring.
Finally we see the match leading into the big announcement and the match that this storyline has been waiting to see for weeks. As far as the actually wrestling goes, this was a good match with solid wrestling on both superstars part. I thought that Evan Bourne coming into the angle was a good idea. Let’s face it you get these two guys in the ring at the same time, you see a fast pace and explosive style of wrestling that you don’t find that often in the WWE. However, I am a little dissapointed that we didn’t see Kane with his mask on in the match. Two straight weeks we have seen him display it on camera only when he is backstage, once holding it and once with it on. Why do they feel the need to build this up? Will we see it at No Mercy? I mean yes this is a big thing, it’s the element that defined Kane early on. But we don’t need a build up this up. Not many people are going to be shocked when they see it on, they’ll be relieved but not surprised. Whatever, it’s all in stride to bring in more purchases which I get in that aspect.
Then we see the segment that made the show and defines this column appropriately as Thriller. Mikey Adamle sets up the main event for RAW at No Mercy to be Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels. It’s part three in this epic saga that just never seems to lose its excellence. First time around we saw Jericho beat the snot out of HBK leaving him in his own pool of blood. Part two showed these two mens pushing the limits in a match with no limits putting their bodies on the line and leaving it all in the ring. Now with the series tied, its time to see who will take the lead. Many people would think how could one possibly top the last meeting between these two warriors. And the WWE told us here’s how. You throw in the World Heavyweight Championship and a ladder and let them go nuts. This is brilliant. Michaels a man who has been in tremendous ladder matches such as his one against Razor Ramon and Jericho who introduced the Money in the Bank match as well as being a part of by far the most exciting match on Smackdown, the first Fatal-Four Way TLC, combining their talents in one match that is sure to blow the rook of the Rose Garden.
