The battle of wrestling great Jake “The Snake” Roberts with addiction have been well documented before. So was his recent visit at rehab (which was paid for by WWE’s new treatment program to all talent that has worked there), after which Jake seemed to be on the road to recovery. He had been working on independent wrestling shows for a while now, and always seemed clean, hence steady on his way to victory over his demons.
However, things fell apart this weekend, as has been well documented on TMZ.com and several YouTube.com videos. Jake appeared highly intoxicated at a small show, to the point he couldn’t work a match, and got in a confrontation with a few people. It’s really a sad sight to see.
Two sides of the story have come out. One being Jake’s assistant/manager, claiming that Roberts was handed “a cold drink” when he got to the show not knowing what it was, and then he didn’t remember anything up until he woke up in his hotel room the next morning.
The other — described by Baby Doll, Jake’s former daughter-in-law, here — claims this was simply a cover-up. We should point out that the show was held at a bar and several people have reported Roberts of going back and forth to the bar.
It’s sad to see a wrestling legend going through some rough times again. We wish Jake the best.
