Thanks to last night’s Raw, I am re-thinking about ordering Summer Slam. I ordered it already, but I seriously might cancel the order. The show was a train wreck and I think what bothers me the most is what they are doing with their top star AND after such promising shows once the draft happened Raw is quickly going down the tube. I would say Raw was one big CRAPFEST last night.
I want to share something that I read about John Cena yesterday. And what you are going to read just shows what a cool guy he is. And I have said it from the beginning while I cannot stand his character on TV I think in the real world he’s a super nice guy. I’m taking this from yesterday’s Wrestling Observer’s update. “John Cena caused a commotion at Wildwood Barbecue on Park Avenue in New York according to page six in the New York Post. A group of 30 women begged him for photos, he bought a round of beer for them and they started screaming and by the end of the night he was buying beer for every table in the place and it was a madhouse. (thanks to Jeff Sheridan). After reading this I thought my God how cool it must have been to be there. And it’s stories like this one that make me more disgusted than ever with the way John Cena is being used and portrayed by Vince and his creative team.
I absolutely hated the crap that Cena said in Raw’s opening. Listen this might sound totally ridiculous on my part, but I actually feel sorry for Cena that he has to come out week after week and say the most obnoxious things and over act as he says them. I hated his promo last night. Some of it was like listening to almost exactly what he said when he took on Triple H at Backlash. Only this time instead of Hunter’s name being used, Batista got that spot. I’m talking about Cena getting all excited and loud announcing that this match has bee six years in the making. He hyped it as much as he could and again like I said it was so similar to the way he hyped his match against Hunter’s. But that was nothing compared to the worst line creative could have given Cena to say. And that was, when he said an entire nation goes to war with him every Monday night. Oh dear God, what the hell is going on here? This guy could be a much better face, or even an awesome heel if McMahon would stop pandering to the young kids and give this man some depth and credibility to the character.
I absolutely hated what he had to say and as I said the guy deserves so much better than the material that he’s handed week after week. Let the guy just adlib and do his own thing and let creative put their energy into another superstar. The opening totally turned me off, but of course I totally loved it when Batista said he wouldn’t be caught dead doing some of the things that Cena does, and he did the you can’t see me gesture. I also love the line where he said that it’s no wonder fans over 15 want to see him beat Cena senseless. Hey what do you want to bet Cena would love to beat creative senseless? I guess you could say Batista saved this spot from being a total dud, but believe me I’ve seen better and neither guy made me want to see them go at it Sunday at Summer Slam.
The Beth Phoenix, Kelly Kelly, Mickie James, Kofi Kingston and Santino segment was okay. Phoenix taking Kelly Kelly out immediately was not a surprise to me, if she didn’t that would have surprised me. The guy that stuck out in a good way for me was Kofi Kingston. I like this guy and I enjoyed listening to him talk when he challenged Santino to a match. Santino accepted the challenge but only with a different opponent, that being Mickie James, and I didn’t mind this mini match either, it was entertaining and it all kind of set up their match pretty well for Sunday. Hey did you guys notice Santino’s UNIBROW? Hell I did and a lot of you did too. Immediately some of you emailed me asking what’s up with Marella’s unibrow? Hey they can’t put a thing past us. Okay getting past the unibrow, I have to give it to Mr. Adamle he handled himself very well with Kane backstage. While creative’s reasoning for Adamle to check out Kane’s burlap bag was totally LAME. He had to check it out because, children will be going back to school soon and he didn’t want them scaring their classmates by impersonating Kane with the burlap sack. Oh just like the garbage they give Cena to say this rates right up there. But Adamle at least was decent on the mic. Although for me he’s just to monotone and way too calm. So he set up out of the blue Kane vs. Chris Jericho calling the match as Summer Slam Spectacular.
Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase cut a backstage promo basically about how young they are and how they have achieved more than any Hall of Famer at their age. This all had to do with a video from 24/7 with The Valiant’s losing to Tito Santana and Ivan Putski. They talked about how next year at Summer Slam it could be Rhodes vs. DiBiase. Again I was very pleased with Rhodes and DiBiase’s mic work and at least this week they got a chance to talk. For the love of God, I could not understand the Cryme Tyme vs. Highlander’s match. Who the hell cares or even remembers the Highlanders? And Cryme Tyme winning doesn’t mean a thing as far as making them look like they are strong competitors. HALLELUJAH CM Punk got a segment on the show. No not a segment called the main event, but wow they used him and abused him as well. Three of my readers emailed me before Raw and said they thought the challenge that JBL would come up with would be a drinking challenge, since Punk doesn’t drink. And they were all right.
The reason why I said they abused Punk was because JBL did most of the talking, the segment was all his. The little that Punk got to say was good, but again this was all about Bradshaw. Punk did a very good job when he got the chance and he hit the jackpot when he said, “With all due respect to John Cena and Batista, I will prove that I’m the man.” That’s something the World Champion should say and I maybe I’m over doing it by saying that Punk wasn’t used very well, at least when he spoke and got his turn he handled it very well.
And now it’s time for the Summer Slam Spectacular. Trust me it wasn’t spectacular, no not even close. Not only did the match do nothing for me, but also Chris Jericho the guy that has been in the hottest angle along with Shawn Michaels for months, goes out wrestles, and leaves. There’s no mic work from Jericho and there’s no focus on him when the match is over. They should have given Jericho the two minutes that was given to Cryme Tyme’s match, and he could have reacted to facing Kane. Ah but the match was just a set up for Mike Adamle to come out and demand in that very quiet calm way that he had to see that burlap bag. After too much talking from Adamle, and mind you not once did Adamle seem to fear the monster Kane, Kane said the man who wore it has been scarred and tortured and damaged beyond all human recognition. Kane said the mask wasn’t his. He opened the bag and pulled out a mask, and then Kane said it’s Rey Mysterio and he laughed and handed the mask to I guess a shocked Mike Adamle. I have to say the West Virginia crowd wasn’t exactly reacting in a loud way to all of this, in fact it seemed to lack some real creepy hype. I think had Vince been in there instead of Adamle he would have shown a lot more fear with his facial expressions and this could have come off a lot better.
I feel that William Regal vs. Jamie Noble had the makings of something good, but if you blinked you would have missed the match. And finally we got the main event rematch, with the new tag team champs, Batista and Cena vs. DiBiase and Rhodes. Let’s just say that I couldn’t get into this. Yes DiBiase and Rhodes got the titles back, but let’s face it, their win wasn’t the focus, in fact after their victory Batista and Cena took care of each guy and laid them out. Listen I know the main idea was to get real heat going between Batista and Cena and they did that but somewhat at the expense of the young guys. I wish I could say that I’m dying to see Batista vs. Cena but I’m not, the only match that has my attention is the HIAC with Taker and Edge. But next weekend you will read more about my thoughts when I do my predictions.
I will be going to Raw next week and I sure hope I get a better show than what they put on last night. All I know is that things have to change, and I’m talking about what they are doing to Cena. Wouldn’t it be cool if Cena turned heel and not Batista? I’m sure that’s not going to happen but what a way to turn things around. I will hopefully be here to share my Summer Slam predictions with you next weekend. I am hoping that ECW and Smackdown can get me back on track and change my mind about canceling my Summer Slam order.
