Just 24 hours after One Night Stand, there was not a whole lot of bad blood.
The show opened with Triple H once again announcing that the Age of Orton is over. And just as he said that he didn’t care who’s next in line, John Cena interrupted and asked for a title match against HHH, stating that with the upcoming draft, it may never happen again. That brought out Jeff Hardy, who said he deserved a shot as much as Cena. Subsequently, McMahon made it official: Cena vs. Hardy for the chance at facing Hunter. He then plugged “Million Dollar Mania,” informing the audience that they can register for their chance to win at WWE.com.
Mr. Kennedy was scheduled to face Paul Burchill, but since Katie Lea was scheduled for a match, Paul was going help her prepare, so he brought out Umaga to replace him.
Mr. Kennedy defeats Umaga via countout
Umaga’s ribs were taped from his Falls Count Anywhere loss to Jeff Hardy last night, and Kennedy used that to his advantage. Finally, after minutes of Kennedy beating on Umaga’s torso, Umaga went for a splash outside on the table, and missed. The Samoan Bulldozer was unable to get back in the ring before the 10 count, and Kennedy was named the winner, with Burchill attacking him afterwards.
Santino Marella/Carlito defeat Cody Rhodes/Hardcore Holly by pinfall (non-title)
Cody Rhodes brought out Roddy Piper as the special timekeeper. Rhodes started out this match well, but would then get pummeled by Santino until Holly tagged in and took over. However, when Piper tried to trip up Santino, it gave Carlito enough of a distraction to get the double-team on Holly and give Santino the pinfall. Holly would verbally trash Rhodes after the match for bringing Piper out without telling him. Ted DiBiase then came out to announce that he’s just 3 weeks away from selecting a tag-team partner.
Chris Jericho defeats JBL via DQ to retain Intercontinental Championship
This match went back and forth, with Y2J constantly going for Layfield’s throat. JBL caught Jericho off the top rope for the Last Call, but he couldn’t connect on the Clothesline From Hell, and Jericho kicked him to the outside. JBL would then give Jericho a boot and grab a chair, which provoked the referee to call for the DQ. Afterwards, Y2J attacked JBL with the chair, eventually drawing blood from his mouth as with Cena last night.
Beth Phoenix/Katie Lea defeat Melina/Mickie James
(Kinda weird seeing Melina as a face.)
Katie surprised James at first, but then Mickie took over. Melina kept begging for a tag, and once she got it, she went straight for Beth and went absolutely crazy. As Mickie was fighting Katie, Beth blindsided her, allowing Katie to pick up her first win.
Lance Cade defeats Trevor Murdoch via pinfall
Pretty good brawl between the former Tag Team Champions, with both men getting in head shots, but Cade hit his sit-down spinebuster after Murdoch fell into a punch off the top rope.
John Cena approached Mickie backstage and apologized for everyone thinking that they’re an item. Mickie accepted and Cena brought her a pair of panties that he says she left at his place last night. The Women’s Champion was embarrassed and left.
John Cena defeats Jeff Hardy via pinfall to become Number-one Contender for the WWE Championship
Surprisingly, the majority of fans were going for Hardy in this match. Many near falls, but Cena picked up the win with an FU, earning the chance to face Triple H at WWE’s Night of Champions.
