Woo I really liked last night’s Smackdown; we got another very good show. Here in Chicago we didn’t get it until 11:30, but it was well worth the wait, the show was filled with solid wrestling. So I’m guessing this was shock week in the WWE. Raw ended abruptly, Tazz and Mike Adamle walked out during the ECW main event and last night the World Champion was stripped of that title. And I like these little surprises. It’s not often that we get caught off guard. Let me tell you about the things I liked the least and then it’s all highlights from there on.
Do you remember two weeks ago when Festus faced Undertaker, and looked very good against him? I figured after that performance we might see a slight singles push for this guy, but I guess not. Last night we were back to Festus and Jesse and they took on Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins. And the guy that held his own against Taker wasn’t able to come out with a win in this match. Hawkins and Ryder beat the duo and I guess you could say it kind of puzzled me to see Festus and Jesse lose this one. When I watched this match I kind of felt that all the momentum that Jesse and Festus had was kind of dwindling. Maybe this was a one-time thing but I just found this to be an odd ending.
As I said we got some solid matches but we also got a few squashes for the night. A few too many. I’m still not grabbing on to Vladimir Kozlov, but I was able to take this one in because ECW’s Colin Delaney was involved. Let’s see that no good Armando Estrada continues to put poor little Delaney up against guys that could eat him. But should Colin win then he gets to sign a WWE contract. I have to say Delaney is a character that you can really sympathize with so this was one squash that I saw coming but I still liked it. The next squash was Finlay vs. Julio Dinero. I remember watching Dinero back in ECW days and this guy always showed me a lot. And I know he’s been around for a while. I didn’t need to read the spoilers to know that Finlay wouldn’t have a problem with Dinero. Listen this was another quickie squash but it was nice to see Finlay get his aggressiveness back and it was even better to watch this match and not have slapstick comedy accompany the match. And finally the other squash was Nunzio getting brutalized by Mark Henry. What I didn’t get here is that Big Show came out with Nunzio and seemed to be there for protection, yet all he did was watch Nunzio take the beating. I couldn’t figure out why Show didn’t stop it right away.
And once this was over Big Show then came into the ring and Mark Henry did a Khali. He looked at show and slowly left the ring with a smile. Oh yes we have seen this all before. I guess its safe to say Judgment Day will be Show vs. Henry. Here’s hoping that Henry doesn’t do another Khali in that match and make Big Show look bad, real bad. These were the segments that were fair to really not so hot but the rest of Smackdown was a pleasure to watch. And before I forget I have to say welcome to Smackdown Mick Foley. He did another awesome job with Michael Cole and what a treat it was to listen to him. He was as smooth as he could be, and Mick seemed right at home. Bringing Foley on board is a real plus for this show. The show opened with Vickie’s care taker or should I say assistant Theodore Long announcing The Tag Team titles, The U.S title and the World Champion title would be on the line. And we started out with John Morrison and Miz vs. Shannon Moore and Jimmy Wang Yang. This was a good match but then again every time this group gets together it’s always good. Again I will say that the Miz has really come through along with Morrison and pairing them up was a wise move. See sometimes WWE makes good decisions. I thought maybe just maybe Moore and Yang would win this one since they have had many opportunities in the past, but Miz and Morrison are still the tag team champs.
I have to give it to Michelle McCool and Cherry for looking very sharp against Natalya Neidhart and Victoria. I was totally pleased with Cherry and Michelle. Victoria we know is one terrific wrestler, and Natalya’s background speaks for itself, but Michelle is really working her ass off and each week that shows more and more. I also thought Cherry looked much better than last week. This was one of my favorite matches of the show. I liked the flow and I’m very happy with the way many of the women on Smackdown are more than eye candy. And before I go into the main event, M.V.P vs. Matt Hardy was one very strong match. These two gave it their all, but as good as it was AND it was I now need Hardy and MVP to move on. Maybe in a year or so we can start something up again, but it’s time to end their rivalry. I don’t think Hardy and M.V.P. ever had one lousy match and their feud was one of the BEST in WWE, but after a while it gets a little tiring and I would love to think that it’s now done.
As far as the main event? I loved it. First I am still thrilled with Vickie Guerrero, she has come a long way and I love her character and this woman gets absolutely great fan reaction. Vickie’s heat is just outstanding and maybe it’s because she has Edge to work side by side with. But whatever the reason is, she plays this bitch role so well. Also I want to add that one of my readers, Tony met some superstars last week and he wanted me to let you guys know that Vickie was very nice and caring. He couldn’t say enough good things about the woman. And I believe it; I bet that this heel role is so not Vickie, yet she does one hell of a job with it. And she did a super job by getting the best of the Undertaker. This so-called main event was a perfect way to end the show. The fun started when Vickie decided to end Taker’s finishing move, the move that has injured too many of the superstars. This was the start of some good interaction between Taker and Vickie. With Vickie’s “injured” and silent fiancé Edge standing behind her Vickie also told Taker that he was being stripped of this title. Oh my God, the facial expressions on Taker were excellent. He didn’t say one word, what he was thinking was said with his facials. I’ll tell you he really added to this, and when it was all said and done Vickie sent Khali out to take the belt from Taker. Taker placed the belt in the middle of them and as Khali went to grab it, but Taker kicked him and then put the banned move on him. And then the Edgeheads, Hawkins and Ryder ran in like kids took the belt and ran out to give it to Vickie. Vickie and Taker stole the show with Edge right up there with just as good facials as his nemesis Taker.
I loved the ending and let’s face it Taker will not be stripped long, I will guarantee you that at Judgment Day Taker will win and get the title back. I was happy with Raw and very happy with last night’s show as well. I think the shock endings from Raw and Smackdown will make for some good TV next week. As far as Adamle and Tazz disappearing I don’t think that many fans really care if Mike Admale shows up, although I have to say WWE.com updated the ECW situation and I did get a kick out of what they said. Okay I will return on Tuesday with my Raw thoughts and if you can, try to catch me tonight on Over The Ropes.
