PARSIPPANY — An upcoming independent wrestling show in Lake Hiawatha has been canceled after the township officials complained.
Promoted as “one of the most brutal wrestling matches ever conceived” by the East Coast Professional Wrestling Arena, the event had been scheduled for Saturday at the wrestling school on North Beverwyck Road, school owner Gino Caruso said.
The township learned about the event from a Daily Record story on Monday. Among those scheduled to appear was a wrestler once accidentally set on fire during a match.
“It set off bells and whistles in all offices in town hall,” Mayor Michael Luther said, adding that “shows or events” are not among the permitted uses at the wrestling school.
Caruso said he was notified by the zoning department that he lacked a permit to hold the show, which was to have involved six wrestlers attempting to climb a ladder to grab a suitcase — with a $10,000 check inside — dangling above the ring.
“A lot of chaos can happen with that ladder,” Joe Milone, a wrestling broadcaster, said at a Sunday press conference in Wayne.
“Code enforcement went to the site. It was acknowledged it was not a proper venue,” Luther said.
