– Mickie James defeated Beth Phoenix to win the WWE Women’s Championship for the 4th time in her WWE career. This was the first time in nearly a year that the Women’s title has changed hands at a show other than a pay-per-view (the most recent being at a house show in Paris, France on April 24, 2007). Her title win comes as a surprise to many mostly due to the fact of her absence on RAW over the past few months. Perhaps there is more to this story, and if there is, we’ll keep you updated.
– Also during RAW, it was announced that the WWE will be bringing back the King of the Ring tournament. Many fans will remember the tournament as being an entire pay-per-view (last in 2002), but this time will be featured during a 3-hour RAW next week. The field has been as large as 32 contestants (2000) and as small as 8 contestants (1997, 2006). This year’s field will also feature 8 superstars. Expect them to be announced sometime before RAW next week, with possible “play-in” matches on ECW and/or SmackDown this week.
– Carlito and Santino Marella defeated London and Kendrick on RAW to earn their spot as #1 Contenders for the World Tag Team Championships and will face Bob Holly and Cody Rhodes at Backlash for the titles. There are currently no plans to have the titles switch hands, but as with WWE, anything is possible.
