There were two major highlights last night on Smackdown. Smackdown seems to be in pattern, and by that I mean it wasn’t a bad show, but it wasn’t a show that blew me away, it was an okay show and nothing more. Did it do a good job hyping matches for Wrestlemania? Yeah I think it did a fairly good job, but the show just seems to be on cruise control, something is lacking and that something is start power. However, one of the highlights of the night might have been a preview of who we will see join the Smackdown roster and if he does he will give the show a huge boost. I think I will start with this highlight first.
The hottest segment on last night’s show was Chris Jericho on MVP’s VIP Lounge. MVP and Chris Jericho absolutely shined and having Chris Jericho return to Smackdown after 5 ½ years was a nice surprise. The crowd reaction was outstanding for Y2J and it reminded me of the way the crowd used to react to Jericho years ago. I don’t know about you guys, but as soon as I watched Jericho and MVP interact I could not get over their chemistry and I thought this is what Smackdown needs, a Chris Jericho and MVP feud. These guys played off each other perfectly, and as much as I would love to see Matt Hardy return and continue with MVP, I would much rather see a major storyline going on with MVP and Jericho. As I said this was my number 1 highlight of the night, and I hope this wasn’t a one-time thing. Chris Jericho is the star power that the show is so lacking of, and after Wrestlemania it would be so damn cool to have a draft with Chris Jericho leaving Raw and making Smackdown his home.
So if this was my number one highlight of the night, let me tell you what my second highlight of Smackdown. That would have to be Chavo Guerrero vs. The Undertaker. Not only did I enjoy watching Taker and Guerrero go at it, but also the post match was outstanding. I am a Chavo Guerrero fan and anytime he gets a chance to wrestle I am right there taking it all in. So having him in a main event against a guy like the Undertaker was a nice treat for me. I thought Chavo did a nice job and Taker has been looking so much more alive (even though he’s the deadman) he just seems so focused week after week. I was very happy with the match and the post match with Edge and his Edge-heads was off the charts. Edge and his merry men came in and attacked brutally attacked Taker. Undertaker got chair shot after chair shot. But it was Edge that really slammed Taker. After hitting the Undertaker in the back and then the head, Edge went berserk and ended the show by giving Taker a conchairto. This was one brutal attack and it most definitely heated up the Edge and Taker feud for the World Heavyweight Title. I cannot wait to see this match at Wrestlemania; I have a feeling that Edge and Taker are going to have one of the top matches of the night.
Okay so I had two highlights the rest of the show was just there. There were two handicap matches the first was with Batista vs. Deuce and Domino. Of course Batista wasn’t going to lose this one, but I thought it was done well. I would think it’s just a matter of time before D&D finally break up. Just like Mark Henry these two haven’t won a match in MONTHS. During this match I was expecting Umaga to do a run in, but that never happened. Dave Batista has been giving his all in last several months and it’s a pleasure to watch him wrestle each week. I was glad that Michael Cole made a comment about Batista being upset about not being in the title picture. I’m hoping that in time he will have that chance again. Before the next handicap match there was a backstage segment with Maryse and Cherry. I know this sounds weird but Maryse comes off fairly well as a heel and I liked how she was getting in Cherry’s face about the Diva contest by telling her it must be fixed since she lost last week. I think, and think is the key word that Maryse has some potential as being a top Diva heel. And as far as the Diva contest goes it’s not hurting the show and it’s not helping the show, it’s just a way to fill some time, and thankfully it didn’t go on too long.
The next handicap match was Big Show taking on Chase Stevens, Andy Douglas the former Naturals from TNA and Luke Hawx. This was your typical Big Show squash. This did nothing for me and before this match we got the Floyd Mayweather vignette and Smackdown put a lot of time in focusing on Show and Mayweather’s match at Wrestlemania and the time they put into it again meant very little to me. It’s funny when Mayweather and Big Show go at it on Raw it definitely gets my attention. But when they keep Mayweather off and have Big Show squashing jobbers or cruiserweights, my interest disappears rather fast. Edge vs. Funaki was next and of course Edge dominated which was fine and I like how Edge is starting to show a “wicked” side to him. Edge imitating the Undertakers by finishing off Funaki with a Tombstone was done so well. It’s like they are now making Edge a sadistic heel, and that’s a character I could definitely take too.
So Michael Cole says something like this about Palumbo to Jonathan Coachman. I don’t know what it is Coach but all of a sudden you can see a lot of intensity in Chuck Palumbo. That is WWE’s way of saying that Palumbo is a dud and let’s see if we can build him up by saying wow he’s like a changed man since he’s been going against Kane. Please just like Chris Masters, Heindenrich and others Chuck Palumbo isn’t intense and I do not see him being anything more than he is now, and that’s not saying much. Palumbo vs. Kane was what you would expect. But this match was really about the Battle Royal for the ECW title. As this match was going on Khali came in and took out Kane and Palumbo and then Mark Henry showed up and slammed Khali the Biloxi, Mississippi crowd loved this. I would have to say that Henry’s slam stole this segment. For this first time a very long time, Henry looked strong. So it took Khali and Henry to wake me up during this match.
And finally the Miz and John Morrison took on Biscuits and Gravy otherwise known as Jesse and Festus. This was for the tag team title and had I not read the spoilers I would have thought that we would have gotten new tag team champs. Jesse and Festus seem to be the tag team favorite since they show up on ECW and Smackdown often. But Miz and Morrison won and it was a good match. I like Morrison and Miz as a tag team, and for me to say that is something because I think most of you know that the Miz used to bug the hell out of me. But he has shown me that underneath his very annoying personality there’s a guy that knows how to wrestle. Teaming him up with Morrison has brought the best out of him.
As you can see this wasn’t an off the charts show, but again it was an all wrestling show. It was announced that next week we will get Chris Jericho vs. MVP. That’s a match that should be well worth waiting for. We have 8 days until Wrestlemania and one Raw, ECW and Smackdown to go. This coming week is important and I really hope that they build Mania so well that I’ll be counting down the hours until the show is on. I will be back on Tuesday with my Raw thoughts and don’t forget if you get a chance you can hear me on http://www.mywcwp.com/ at 9:15 pm eastern time. I will be calling in tonight to talk about Wrestlemania with hosts Nick and Max.
