Okay I don’t want to spoil tomorrow’s Smackdown, but I just want to let you know what it was like being there live Tuesday night. As I said last week this was my first Smackdown since July 2002. I enjoyed myself very much, however my son didn’t feel the same way. He was bored from ECW on, and while he said he wouldn’t go to a Smackdown taping again, he definitely would go to a live Raw show again. Let me get into the column and explain a little more about my son’s thoughts on being there.
There definitely is a difference between a Smackdown and Raw show. I know I have said this in previous columns but Raw has more mic work going for it while Smackdown is more wrestling. And you really feel that difference when you are there live. That is why my son said he wouldn’t have a problem going to a Raw show because they have so much more going on. Okay so Smackdown was more wrestling and to be honest with you while I would have liked maybe the Cutting Edge or MVP’s Lounge, Smackdown offered two very good must see matches. Unfortunately the rest of the show wasn’t anything special. And two matches don’t seem like a lot but they really made Smackdown worth watching. Before I go on let me quickly give you my thoughts on ECW.
I don’t know how many of you watched the show, but with the exception of the opening match with Tommy Dreamer and Colin Delaney vs. The Miz and John Morrison, and the main event qualifying match for the Money In The Bank match with CM Punk and Viscera, I felt ECW was a boring show. Nothing in the middle worked at all. But let me get right to the main event. While I could have done without another Punk vs. Vis match, I could tolerate it because our hometown boy Punk was in it. Now what I really want to tell you is that Punk was just a class act Tuesday night. I’m sure for those of you that watched the show you heard the massive pop that he got. But what you didn’t get to see was Punk and the fans. Now during the match there were two signs right in the front row that said CM Punk, but the P was crossed out with a J over it. So it was CM Junk. I was very surprised that they were showing these signs while the match was going on, and I made that comment to my son. About a minute later someone came over and took both signs away and that was it. But after the match Punk went right to that area, now I don’t know if he talked to the guys but he was right there shaking hands and hugging fans. I thought it was very cool of him. And he wasn’t done, CM went from one side to the other going into aisles mingling with fans and when he would walk down the aisles it was amazing to see how many young kids were following him.
Punk came off so real, and it seemed like he was truly happy to be in front of the hometown crowd. For m and even my son this was one of the highlights of the night. Okay as far as the Smackdown taping went, all in all it was a fair show. The only match that received very little if any reaction was Kane and Noble vs. Palumbo and Khali. Now Kane got a phenomenal reaction when he came out but once the match started that all died. I was absolutely shocked that Jamie Noble came out to NOTHING. I expected to hear a decent pop for this guy, but he really got nothing. Also while the Miz and Morrison got great heat during the ECW taping, their Money In the Bank qualifying match wasn’t exactly something the crowd was into. And believe me the guys did a good job, it wasn’t like they didn’t give their all. Smackdown started with hometown girl Maria being the Emcee for the Diva contest. All I want to say about this is Michelle McCool got a fantastic reaction, the Chicago fans definitely like her.
Big Show took on Jimmy Wang Yang and Shannon Moore. And let me just tell you Show reaction was outstanding. I didn’t see that coming at all. As soon as his music hit the crowd went nuts for him. Big Show got one of the top pops of the night. Now for the match of the night. That match goes to MVP vs. Batista. Without going into details just know that Batista got the BIGGEST pop of the night, and MVP wasn’t exactly ignored either. The crowd loves both of these guys. Please if you don’t want to watch all of Smackdown do your best to make sure you see this match along with the main event Cage Match with HBK and Ric Flair taking on Edge and the Edge-heads. This was the match that woke my son up. Yeah it took almost three hours for Jason to look at me with a smile and say now you’re talking. This was non-stop action and again I don’t want to spoil it for you, but the crowd was very into Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels. Also Edge got great heat. There are a couple of added attractions added to this one so try to watch if you can. These last two matches definitely stole the show.
There you have it a night that I really did enjoy. And even though my son Jason wasn’t into things like I was, I had a great time with him and I’m going to hold him to his word and make sure he goes with me to the next Raw. Since I didn’t have a Raw column up this week I just want to say two things. First the Mayweather/Big Show feud was done absolutely perfect this week. What a difference from the crap that we got last week. They had to turn Mayweather heel, and that turn made things gel so well Monday night. Second I thought with Jeff Hardy’s I.C. title loss to Chris Jericho that it was a sure thing that Hardy would win the MITB match. Little did I know or any of us know that we would find out the next day that Hardy was facing his second suspension. Okay I will say at first I was angry and then I was sad because I figured this guy needs to go to rehab, he has a real problem. Well then on a hotline report I am hearing that he does drugs for recreational purposes and that he doesn’t believe in rules and lives in his own world and then LINDA ROBIN says screw it. I can’t worry about this guy anymore. Every time they start pushing him at the TOP he does this. When it happened in the Summer I was so upset about it, but now I feel one of two things. Either he’s not returning to WWE or if he does, I would think very hard before I would give Jeff a major push again. I feel bad for Jeff’s fans, and I am one of them, but enough is enough. WWE wants to send him to rehab and if he doesn’t go they won’t take him back. So let’s see if Jeff gets the help he needs. Okay I will be back Tuesday with my Raw thoughts.
