It was inching toward 2 a.m., Saturday morning, and the hardy souls on Dubuque’s Locust Street still sounded celebratory despite temperatures dipping into the mid-20s.
About 25 die-hard – and we do mean die-hard- World Wrestling Entertainment fans huddled beneath blankets and sleeping bags and jackets and layers of clothing, outside the locked doors of the Five Flags Center. They came early, incredibly early, in front of the 10 a.m. ticket office opening, hungry to be the first in line to score up-close seats for the full-throttle energy of their brand of professional wrestling.
WWE returns to Dubuque for the first time since 2006. The March 9 card features a Smackdown/ECW Road to Wrestlemania show at 3 p.m. at Five Flags.
Tickets went on sale Saturday, with prices starting at $20 and topping out at $60.
WWE superstars scheduled to appear include World Heavyweight champion Edge, former would champ Batista, United States champion MVP, Rey Mysterio, Kane and Matt Hardy.
The campers outside of Five Flags sounded like they were living for a smackdown. View this THonline.com interview to see why these wrestling fans would wait for hours, braving the bite of early February just to watch sweaty men with big pecs and finely toned women who could crush them like cans.
