Brock Lesnar, known for his professional wrestling career in World Wrestling Entertainment, is tipped to be in the main event of UFC’s upcoming event in the United Kingdom scheduled on June 14. The news has been confirmed by UFC president Dana White, who also revealed that London’s O2 Arena will be the venue for the bout.
According to The Sun, Lesnar has been tapped to headline in the key London show due to the huge popularity he generated from his earlier wrestling career.
Lesnar made his debut on WWF television on the March 18, 2002 in the episode of WWF RAW, attacking Al Snow, Maven, and Spike Dudley in the course of a match. Tagged as “The Next Big Thing,” he won the King of the Ring tournament in June 2002, consequently defeating Rob Van Dam in the final round. This victory earned him a shot at the WWE Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam where he beat The Rock to become the final WWE Undisputed Champion.
After his final match at WrestleMania XX, Lesnar sidelined his career in WWE to pursue a career in the National Football League. This move upset many people behind WWE, as the company had invested heavily in Lesnar. He eventually played for the Minnesota Vikings, where he created controversy in some games by starting minor fights and got heat from the Kansas City Chiefs for a sack on quarterback Damon Huard, which drew a big response from the crowd of 6,000. After playing in a few pre-season games, Lesnar was eventually cut from the team after not showing up for practices due to an injury sustained by a motorcycle ride during the summer of 2004.
Lesnar returned to the ring, only this time, he ventured into New Japan Pro Wrestling. He won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in a three-way match at a New Japan Pro Wrestling show in the Tokyo Dome in 2005, which included the then-champion Kazuyuki Fujita and Masahiro Chono. After several victories, he decided to pursue mixed martial arts, training with the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy under Greg Nelson. In his first fight, he emerged triumphant against Min Soo Kim by submission in K-1 Dynamite!! USA last June. Eventually, he reached a deal to fight with UFC, which was announced during UFC 77.
Lesnar will reportedly meet with UFC matchmaker Joe Silva to discuss his upcoming fight in London. Meanwhile, fans can catch his first fight in UFC at UFC 82 on February 2, where he is slated to fight Frank Mir.
