I’ll give Smackdown a nice 6 out of 10. It’s not that I found Smackdown to be a bad show; but even though there was plenty of wrestling, most of the matches were nothing to rave about.
I’m happy to say that the main event was solid as was one other match, and I do enjoy Smackdown’s lovers, Edge and Vickie. The show seemed to be on cruise control with nothing major happening. Oh wait maybe I’m off with that last statement, and I will explain what I mean near the end of the column. Let me get into the show and why I wasn’t totally impressed with what I saw.
The opening with Rey Mysterio, Vickie, Chavo and Edge was good. I’m not saying it was a strong opener or outstanding but I liked it. Maybe it’s because I’m very happy with Vickie and Edge. I absolutely love the way each one plays off of the other. I have to say Vickie has done an excellent job interacting with Edge. She comes off very comfortable as the bitch of Smackdown and the love of Edge’s life. She plays it like a teenager in love for the first time. She just “melts” when Edge is with her. And Edge is so full of shit, in my opinion he’s just playing her until he doesn’t need her anymore. When he calls her the love of his life and gushes all over her I just start laughing and I find myself wanting to watch these two more and more. As I said the opening was good, but I am a little confused as to why Chavo is on Smackdown going after Vickie for being with Edge, yet is on ECW going after CM Punk and his title. I think I would just keep him on ECW focused on Punk. But it does make sense that Chavo would be so upset to see his aunt with someone else other than his Uncle Eddie. So a good opener with Vickie setting up Chavo vs. Rey for the main event.
The opening match was okay, but as much as I like Jamie Noble and the way Noble has been pushed, I just can’t say the same for Chuck Palumbo. I still find him boring and this week after week anger toward Michelle McCool by Palumbo just leaves me cold. After the match we got one of those cozy little segments with Edge sucking up to Vickie by telling her how lucky he is to have her, and then he wanted to give her a back rub to ease her stress. Oh yes they are my favorite LOVE couple now. I did like the next match very much. That was MVP vs. Batista. I don’t know if I’m way off, but I feel like in the last 9 or 10 months Batista has worked his ass off in the ring. Maybe he’s always been that way but I just seem to notice that since last years WM, he’s just a work horse in the ring. MVP you know the guy that I thought so little of when he started has been doing such a good job wrestling no matter who he faces. This match and the main event were the only top matches of the night.
If I see Undertaker vs. Mark Henry one more time I’m going to shave my head bald like Brittany Spears did last year. Come on how many more times do we need to see these two in the ring. AND how many more times do we need to see Taker destroy Henry and Viscera? I know I don’t need it anymore. Vis and Henry are supposed to be indestructible, well at least they are on ECW, yet the Undertaker seems to take them out with ease. I really did not pay much attention at all while this was going on, I figured I knew how it would end since it’s been done so many times before. Another match that I watched but if you asked me what happened I would have to say, I don’t remember was Kane vs. Deuce. I’ll tell you they have no idea what to do with Kane and I wish the whole Deuce and Domino thing would end. Their music annoys me more than ever, and having Kane face Deuce with a certain Kane win and a win that should be his, was reason enough not to really watch it with much interest.
Okay before I go to the main event, remember at the beginning I said nothing of importance happened? Well something did, and it was my friend that pointed it out to me. I think many of you know that I forget things fast, and I mean FAST. So after Vince had a heart to heart talk with Hornswoggle, Finlay and Vince then had a very interesting conversation. It had to do with Finlay being upset that Vince put Hornswoggle in the Royal Rumble because Finlay felt that the little guy would not stand a chance in there. And then Finlay said that Vince wasn’t holding up his end of the bargain. And Vince said not to ever bring that deal up again. So I’m wondering when was it brought up again, and it was my friend that said a few weeks ago Finlay and Vince mentioned something about a deal on Raw. I totally forgot that and I agree with my friend that Finlay and Vince both know that Hornswoggle isn’t a McMahon but they are going with it so the “real” son doesn’t go for Vince’s money. That was one very intriguing segment. And the arm wrestling match with Hornswoggle vs. Ranjin Singh was okay, but I think creative has come up with funnier ideas in the past. But the segment was okay maybe because I like seeing Finlay playing a face and being so good to his little buddy.
Finally the main event was just awesome. Okay I will admit I’m a little tired of seeing Chavo vs. Rey Mysterio. But these guys did a great job and while it was going on they made me forget that we’ve seen them do this so many times before. I thought with such an average Smackdown it was nice to end with such a terrific match. And I also want to say that I couldn’t be happier about the former Major Brothers now playing Edge’s Edge-heads. I think this is a great boost for them and I’m hoping that the change in their gimmick and working side by side with Edge will help the careers take off, or at least take off to a nice mid card status. As I said this was just an excellent match and kind of like Monday’s Raw, this main event at least made me forget about Smackdown being a little dull.
Before I go I’m sure most of you have read that supposedly Big Show is returning to the WWE. He signed OR is about to sign with the company, I wonder what brand he’ll return too. Okay I will be back with my Raw thoughts on Tuesday or Wednesday, and with two Raws to go before the Rumble I want to see if Shawn Michaels gets in there tomorrow night. I’m also very anxious to find out what’s next for Triple H., and I can’t wait to see Jeff Hardy and Orton heat things up even more than they have.
