The storyline surrounding the main event for to night’s Total Nonstop Action pay-per-view event, “Final Resolution,” is interesting and confusing.
Two heels (bad guys) battle for the TNA world heavyweight championship as Kurt Angle defends the title against Christian Cage. Fans have to endure enough suffering, trying to figure out who to cheer for in this match, but then there’s the AJ Styles factor.
Styles and his tag team partner, Tomko, who were once part of Cage’s “Christian Coalition,” joined forces with Angle a couple of months ago. Styles tried to convince Cage and Angle to put their egos aside and form an alliance, which didn’t work.
Tomko indicates that he won’t choose a side and will be out just for himself, while Styles is still torn.
It’s a shame that a match featuring two great superstars like Angle and Cage can’t stand on its own merit — that a silly subplot has to overshadow the match, and that one of the top young stars in the business in Styles has to appear like a dork in the process.
Here’s tonight’s card:
# LAX vs. Lance Hoyt and Jimmy Rave: The Latin American Xchange faces the “Rock and Rave Infection,” which appears to be losing steam. Rumors are swirling that Rave will eventually be released and that Hoyt and his on-screen girlfriend, Christy Hemme, will be broken up.
# Kaz vs. Black Reign: Frankie Kazarian received a decent push in the last month-and-a half. Now he’s stuck in an angle with Black Reign (a.k.a. Dustin Rhodes). It’ll be interesting to see when Kaz will be able to work with TNA’s top-level stars again.
# Abyss vs. Judas Mesias: This match is long overdue. One thing you can count on in an Abyss match is it usually isn’t for the weak at heart.
# Booker T and Sharmell vs. Robert Roode and Ms. Brooks: It’ll be intriguing to see Booker T’s wife, Sharmell, who’s usually a valet more than a wrestler, work with the more in-ring experienced Brooks. Brooks and Roode have had problems for months, so I can see Brooks costing Roode the match, which will be the final straw in their business relationship.
# Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong: The last time these two knockouts battled for the women’s title, the match ended in a disqualification. I expect Kong’s size (5-10, 270 pounds) to be too much for Kim as she finally wins the title. That will enhance the feud, as the smaller Kim can play the underdog role, chasing to get the title back.
# AJ Styles and Tomko vs. Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash: For the past month, Joe has been the disgruntled employee, disappointed that he isn’t in the TNA world title picture. Joe and Nash have had a strained relationship ever since Joe verbally bashed Nash’s friend, Scott Hall, for his personal problems. Despite the Cage-Angle cloud hanging over Styles and Tomko’s head, I think Joe and Nash won’t be on the same page, allowing Styles and Tomko to retain the tag team titles.
# Motor City Machineguns and Jay Lethal vs. Team 3D and Johnny Devine: Considering this six-man tag match is an Ultimate X match, which requires a lot of high-flying and climbing on cables, that puts Team 3D and Devine at a distinct disadvantage.
# Kurt Angle vs. Christian Cage: Although I don’t like the Angle-Cage-Styles storyline, the match should be very good, even if the Styles factor will most likely overshadow it.

American Gladiators returns: I shamefully admit as a kid, weekend TV programming I looked forward to the most included pro wrestling, “American Gladiators,” and roller derby.
Back in the day, “American Gladiators” was a weekly syndicated program, running from 1989 to 1996, featuring amateur athletes competing against each other, as well as against the show’s own “Gladiators,” in contests of speed and agility.
NBC brings back the program at 8 tonight.
Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali are the hosts.
