Earlier today, just after 6:30 PM, WWE.com announced on its main website the following:
“Chris Mordetzky has been suspended for 60 days, and DH Smith has been suspended for 30 days for violations of WWE’s Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy.”
The announcement was shortly followed by a press release stating the following:
“World Wrestling Entertainment Suspends Two Performers – STAMFORD, Conn., November 2, 2007: In accordance with its Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy, WWE today suspended the following performers for violations: Chris Mordetzky (Chris Masters) for 60 days (second violation) and Harry Smith (D. H. Smith) for 30 days (first violation). Additional information on World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: WWE) can be found at wwe.com and corporate.wwe.com. For information on our global activities, go to http://www.wwe.com/worldwide/ “
The most recent suspensions are obviously two big problems for both individuals, but for different reasons.
Chris Masters has now committed his second violation of the Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy which will not only earn him a 60 day suspension from the ring and a 2nd strike but it will also put his career with World Wrestling Entertainment in quite a limbo. The possibility of having Masters earning another suspension for an additional infraction of the policy could mean that the creative teams may be hesitant to put him into any major or mid-major storylines. For that reason, it could be expected that the repercussions from this hesitance may include keeping any championship belts away from him. It could also mean a trade to ECW where the show lacks much in the way of creativity anyhow. Such a move is considered by some insiders as “a safe bet”.
For D.H. Smith, this suspension comes two weeks after his television debut in which he dedicated his defeat of Carlito to his late father, Davey Boy Smith. Management has been high on this kid from the beginning, believing that the British Bulldog lives within his son’s blood. The young Smith was in line for a decent sized push and much more time in the spotlight on Monday Night RAW. With the recent happenings regarding his suspension, WWE officials may question the commitment of D.H. Smith in the way of his approach to the business. My take is that although he is young and impressionable, he should know first hand how the ingestion of any chemicals can change someone’s life very quickly. Higher-ups in the WWE can only hope that this will be a one time mistake; perhaps one that should have never happened in the first place.
