I know many of you like it when I show my nasty side and bitch about a WWE show. But I can’t do that today because I thought Smackdown was just excellent Friday night. Honestly I can’t think of one thing that didn’t work for me and even though I’m more of a Raw fan, Smackdown again was the top show of the week. Maybe it was because of their excellent main event or maybe it was because of the opening. I think it was what I just mentioned and just about everything else that took place. So if you are getting tired of me praising Smackdown then I would say stop reading here because I’m on a Smackdown high.
While I would like to see the MVP/Matt Hardy feud come to an end they both did a nice job with Smackdown’s opening. Matt is coming through each week on that mic, and MVP comes off like a true pro. Do you remember months ago when I wasn’t into MVP’s push? Oh I’m sue you do. I just didn’t think that he was ready for a major push, well I sure was wrong. I cannot tell you how funny it was to watch the MVP Lounge and hear MVP say that he’s not only the host but the guest along with his tag team partner Matt Hardy. The guy’s ego is bigger than Vince McMahon’s, well not that big, but his character is excellent. It was just very enjoyable watching Porter and Hardy interact here. And while I thought that we would get a U.S. championship match at Unforgiven, MVP nixed that and took it upon himself to make a rematch for the tag team titles against Deuce and Domino. This always puzzles me why a wrestler makes a pay per view match and not the GM. Then again he used the flimsy excuse that he didn’t want to fight his partner. Oh yeah good excuse and the tag team match is on.
The first match of the night was a good one with Matt Hardy vs. Domino. You know that I like good hard worked matches and this definitely was just that. MVP was watching on the outside and I was just waiting for him to interfere in Domino’s behalf and cost Hardy the match. But the opposite happened MVP helped out his partner and Hardy got the win. Now did he help out Hardy out of the kindness of his heart? Or was it to throw it in Matt’s face that Matt needed him to beat Domino? I’m sure it was a way to tell Matt he couldn’t do it without his tag team partner’s help. I loved the match and the ending and this really got things going for the rest of the show. And before I forget the Cincinnati, Ohio crowd was just awesome and you know when they really came off well and it kind of surprised me, it was during the Kane/Batista vs. Khali/Finlay match. Now I wasn’t that thrilled about this one, not that I didn’t want to see it but I had low expectations about it. Well not only did I find myself really into this match but those Cincinnati fans were just fantastic while all of this was going on. I was shocked, I guess I figured the crowd would be kind of quiet during the match but again I was WRONG. This match was a very good match with Batista looking sharp as he has been looking in the last few months and Kane and Finlay also coming off very well. Khali did what was asked of him and now we had two hot matches during the early stages of Smackdown.
In between this match and Hardy’s was Palumbo with Michelle McCool vs. Kenny Dykstra with Victoria. I’m still not a Palumbo fan but this short match came off well. I have to give Palumbo props for the nice job that he did and Kenny also gets props for his performance out there. With all of the suspensions in WWE both of these guys have a chance to really step up and show the fans just what they have to offer in the ring. Call it sophomoric, infantile or whatever but I have to say I got a good laugh with the backstage segment with Jamie Noble setting a trap with Lucky Charms and a big box for Hornswoggle. Listen it doesn’t take much to make me laugh and even having Shannon Moore right there just adds to this coming off humorous. Instead of Hornswoggle falling for the trap, it was Noble that got caught and it was just like watching a live version of my favorite cartoon character, Bugs Bunny getting the best of Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam, so of course I laughed. And I continued to enjoy this little battle between Noble and Hornswoggle when Noble got counted out of the Cruiserweight Title match and then that crafty Hornswoggle poured marbles in the ring and an unaware Noble ran in and proceeded to slip and fall. Yes sophomoric but it still was a highlight of the show for me. . Have you noticed that I very seldom if ever talk about Festus and Jesse?
And finally the match of the night was the I Quit main event match. This was outstanding and I was so glad that it wasn’t rushed. Rey and Chavo have always worked so well together and I would imagine that this match ended their long time feud. What a way to end it. I have to say that Rey moved very well and Chavo took some amazing bumps and along with the hot crowd you couldn’t ask for a better way to end Smackdown and the feud. And after this outstanding match Khali came out to squash Rey’s head and blood poured out of Rey’s mouth. That’s when Batista ran out there maybe a few seconds too late but he ran out and went after Khali by hitting him with the belt and then giving him the spear. I liked this attack by Dave and I also liked Theodore Long adding Batista to the main event at Unforgiven. It makes a lot of sense to me.
After a strong Smackdown it’s on to Greenbay Wisconsin and Raw. We are supposedly going to find out who the new McMahon will be. WWE.com posted a new match for Unforgiven, Triple H vs. Carlito, no surprise there. I hope that Raw will be as good as it was last week if not better. Let me leave you with a request from one of my readers. My reader is looking for the Shawn Michaels appearance on Tough Enough 3. If anyone knows where she can find it would you please email her at mooedson@gmail.com. I will be back Tuesday or Wednesday with my Raw thoughts and I hope I can tell you how thrilled I am with who was revealed as Vince’s bastard son.
