Johnny Nitro was renamed Johnny Morrison because the feeling was that the Nitro name was an established “not-serious” name and he’s now in a world champion position. Vince felt that with his gimmick name people wouldn’t take him serious.
Dusty Rhodes, Jen Hunt, Dave Lagana, and many others brain stormed several different names. Vince made the final decision with Morrison.
