As difficult as it was to write what I did about Chris Benoit yesterday and yes it was a very hard thing for me to write, I feel I have to say a few words about last nights ECW, and what I have to say just makes me smile. Maybe Im doing this more for me than all of you guys because I just needed something to lift me up. But maybe a lot of you felt the very same way that I did when you watched ECW. Before I talk about the show I am getting tons of emails about what I wrote yesterday. For those of you that are upset and really pissed with me, I respect your views and Im very glad that you shared yours thoughts with me. And for those of you that feel the way that I do I thank you so much for all your support.
You know Im constantly putting Vince McMahon down, well Monday night I applauded him for the tribute show but last night I guess you could say that I was really proud of him. From what I read yesterday there were a lot of complaints to WWE and the USA network for having that tribute show and that was the reason why last night Vince was ECWS opening segment. I thought Vince did a super job with his announcement. In case you didnt see the show heres what he said and I took this from WWE.com. Last night on Monday Night Raw the WWE presented a special tribute show, recognizing the career of Chris Benoit. However, now some 26 hours later, the facts of this horrific tragedy are now apparent. Therefore, other than my comments, there will be no mention of Mr. Benoit tonight. On the contrary, tonight’s show will be dedicated to everyone who has been affected by this terrible incident. This evening marks the first step of the healing process. Tonight, the WWE performers will do what they do better than anyone else in the world entertain you.
His opening statement really said it all and maybe by my next sentence you will be able to tell just how much I needed to be entertained. When John Cenas music hit and he came out all hyped up I smiled and it felt so right to me. Yeah you read that right. Cena vs. Nitro was a terrific match, and Tazz and Joey Styles also added a lot to what was going on. But you know what? The San Antonio, Texas fans were the real superstars during this match and through out the show. This crowd I believe felt like I did, they just wanted to move on. They were so loud that I just loved watching and listening to this crowd. Bringing in Rowdy Roddy Piper was just another way to lift the sadness and give the fans something to laugh about. I even thought Matt Striker came off really well interacting with Piper. And of course bringing out the Boogeyman to share his worms with Striker was just icing on the cake. I thought the main event; the Two out of Three Falls match with CM Punk vs. Elijah Burke for number one contender was done very well. I love watching these two guys wrestle each other and they came through in a big way.
I felt so good after watching this show. And I have to hand it to Vince and his staff for knowing just how to turn things around. As I said I put Vince down like crazy and basically he deserves it, but seriously when push comes to shove Vince always seems to know and do the right thing and this week he has done just that. Im looking forward to Smackdown Friday night and I did read the spoilers and I thought they read very well, then again maybe Im just desperate for some kind of normalcy.
Thank you all for letting me post another column and like I said I have a lot of email to answer so please give me time and I will get to all of them. I will be taking the weekend off and I will be back a week from Tuesday with my thoughts on Raw. I want to leave you with something a reader of mine, Dan asked me to post. Linda, I will preface this by saying I’ve been a wrestling fan for close to thirty years. I also have a master’s degree in clinical psychology. I also don’t have your ability to get the word out as it were. Please if you can put up a link to this article from the Edmonton Sun it’s the only one I’ve seen scouring the news links that probably has the accurate story given what the research on murder-suicides says and given what we know about
Benoit’s history. I’d appreciate it. It’s a situation that calls for pity, not the anger that most people are now turning towards. Thanks in advance.
