Really a great TNA Impact tonight – or at least I thought so. The action was good, the storylines progressed, and (most importantly) Jim Cornette provided some major impact from the very beginning of the show. So if you can’t tell, tonight’s major impact moment was Cornette’s announcement of the Match of Champions. This is a match where all of the championships are on the line during the match.
We’ve seen variations of this match over the years. You know how it works – you win the title of the guy you pin; if you pin a tag team champion, then you win the tag titles and you can choose your own partner to defend the belts with. Cornette put a spin on it by saying that all of the titles would be defended prior to the Victory Road pay-per-view.
This is good news for the fans as we get some great matches leading up to the pay-per-view, but it sucked for the Black Machismo Jay Lethal, who lost his newly won X-Division title to Samoa Joe. This puts Samoa Joe in the main event at the pay-per-view and Mr. Machismo out.
I like the segment between Christian and his Peeps against Abyss. For what’s out there in the wrestling world right now, Abyss is one of the most agile big men in the business.
Only a few more comments on the night. Brother Ray was way overacting his reactions during the opening segment. Too much, Ray, too much. Lay off it a bit. On the other hand, Cornette was on the money with his scolding of Kurt Angle and the fact that this was a business and he’s getting paid to compete. Cornette is the best!
Also, I thought the James Mitchell promo for his “son” was well done. For a low-budget organization, TNA really manages to produce some good quality video. It’s impressive. Another comment – I’m a big fan of Chris Sabin (I’ve said this in the past). He’s a great character for this young organization and I’d love to see him grow with it as TNA gets bigger and better. To me, Sabin has “young HBK” written all over him.
And that can only be a great thing for TNA as they ramp up their programming and look for that coveted 2-hour spot on Spike TV.
