I wanted to write about the death of Sensational Sherri Martel separately from today’s column. I did not want to take this tragedy and add it to my column about the fake death of Mr. McMahon. I just felt that it would be so wrong to do something like that. My friend called me on Friday with the news about Sherri’s passing and like most of you I was shocked and so saddened to hear about it.
I might have missed Sherri’s career but I have seen some of HBK’s matches and right with Shawn was his valet Sherri. And it was just awesome watching her work her magic during those matches. But other than seeing a few of these videos I missed so much of Sherri’s amazing career. The reason I wanted to post something was because I was so lucky to see Sherri at last year’s 2006 Hall of Fame. And then the next day she was at the Wrestlemania Brunch. For those of you that got to see the HOF video and watch Sherri you saw what I saw which was one very happy and excited woman. For those of you that did not see the video let me tell you that she was just so full of life that night. Her remarks about Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels and others were beyond funny. This woman was so quick witted and you could tell just how much the business and the wrestling fans meant to her. I had a blast sitting there listening to her talk about her career. And her interaction with some rowdy fans in the audience was just GOLD. She knew just how to handle them.
Watching this woman inducted into WWE’s Hall of Fame was as good as it gets. Little did I know that she would be one of the guests at the brunch the next morning. And Sherri was just as outstanding as she was the night before. She might have toned down her excitement just a little, but she came off so kind and so fan friendly that she had the crowd in the palm of her hand. I looked at that weekend as one of the best times of my life and Sherri was one of the reasons why I felt that way.
My heart goes out to her family and to all her fans, including her newest fan, myself. Just from all the things that I have read about her I know that wrestling meant just about everything to her. She took so much pride in what she did, and I’ll tell you you couldn’t have asked for a better spokesperson to represent the business. Sensational Sherri Martel will be missed but she will definitely not be forgotten. And now every time I hear Shawn Michaels Sexy Boy theme, Sherri’s background vocals will always put a big smile on my face.
