A weekly happening
Tonight’s WWE One Night Stand pay-per-view at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena is a pretty big deal. Like the circus, pro wrestling now comes to town about once a year. That’s wasn’t always the case. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, professional wrestling was held at the Coliseum every week. It featured big time names like Jack Brisco, Dory Funk Jr., Dusty Rhodes, Bobo Brazil, The Assassins and Haystacks Calhoun.
Tonight, it will cost between $20 and $150 to get into the arena. Back in 1965, tickets ranged in price from 50 cents to $2 for ringside seats.
If you have time to kill go to the library and look at old issues of the Times-Union. Not only were the weekly matches advertised in the Sports pages, the results also were covered in the paper.
