With the announcement a few months ago about Orlando’s Citrus Bowl getting next year’s WrestleMania 24 (March 30, 2008), it was just a matter of time before World Wrestling Entertainment would stop by and say hello.
WWE completes a major tour through Florida on Tuesday with its Smackdown and Extreme Championship Wrestling shows at the Amway Arena. Bell time is 7:30 p.m.
The taped-for-television Smackdown will take place first, and air at 8 p.m. June 8 on the CW network, channel 18. At 10 p.m., WWE will go live on Sci-Fi with ECW, a one-hour program.
If you can’t make Tuesday’s show, rewind a few days, as WWE presents a live pay-per-view (“One Night Stand”) in Jacksonville on Sunday and a live Raw in Tampa on Monday.
No card has been announced for Orlando’s televised event as of press time. Here are the details and some wrestlers scheduled to appear:
WHERE: Amway Arena, 600 W. Amelia St., Orlando
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
TICKETS: $20-$70 ($70 buys you a seat in the first five rows) plus convenience charges and facility fees. Available at the Amway Arena box office and through Ticketmaster at (407) 839-3900.
Wrestlers who might be in the ring
EDGE: In the second week of May, Edge took advantage of two injuries (yes, for real) to rising superstar Ken Kennedy and the veteran Undertaker to become Smackdown’s world heavyweight champion. Edge is one of the top three WWE wrestlers.
BATISTA: He’s scheduled to face Edge in a “special main event.” These two also are scheduled to square off Sunday in Jacksonville. Batista could face Edge in Orlando as champion.
KANE: At 7 feet and 326 pounds, Kane is one of the tallest WWE wrestlers. His movie “See No Evil” is still the most successful film WWE has released.
SANDMAN: This guy enters the ring, beers in hand, by emerging from the crowd. Enjoy him while you can.
TOMMY DREAMER: The longest tenured “original” in ECW, debuting in 1993, according to wwe.com.
KELLY KELLY: Just 20, she debuted as an exhibitionist. Now, she and associates Layla and Brooke — known as “Extreme Expose” — dance for fans between matches.
LASHLEY: Lashley will likely defeat WWE boss Vince McMahon for the ECW world championship Sunday in Jacksonville. He was responsible for McMahon being shaved bald at WrestleMania 23.
CM PUNK: No drugs. No alcohol. No dependency lifestyle. Just hard work. He’s one wrestler WWE can count on for many years.
