KOE Cup deemed “huge success” as Nigel McGuiness becomes the first tournament winner
April 28th and 28th 2007 will go down in independent wrestling history as the weekend that a brand new world wide concept was set in stone after the first ever King of Cup winner Nigel McGuiness gave an emotional speech that summed up the entire two day spectacle. Thanking the fans and promoters who made the tournament possible, Nigel declared that from this point forward the KOE Cup will be where those wrestlers who want to work their hardest and those fans who want to see that kind of wrestling can come every year. Fans from all over the world converged on Liverpool to witness the inaugural KOE Cup and they did not leave disappointed.
After two action packed nights featuring 16 of the world’s best independent performers big turn out of promoters, journalists, fans and wrestlers alike gave a standing ovation for what was an event that out did all expectations as Nigel McGuiness held the Cup above his head. With over 2,100 tickets being sold for the 4 shows over 2 days with a top price of £75, the KOE cup was the biggest grossing Indy wrestling tournament of its kind to have ever taken place. Many of the world’s top promotions pooled together to give European fans the kind of events that had only really been seen when the likes of ROH or PWG toured the UK. Yet in an effort to establish the brand new tournament the stars of TNA, ROH, NOAH, Dragon Gate, PWG, CZW, and so many other held nothing back providing those in attendance with the very best independent wrestling the world has to offer.
Next years event is already being planned and offers have come thick and fast from promotions all over the globe to be involved. Event organiser Alex Shane said “From the very offset our goal was to give European fans a chance to have their very own annual big event where the worlds best perform at a level that fans in only the US and Japan get to see live. I always thought it would be great if wrestling’s year end awards featured matches from the UK. I managed to do that in August 2006 (with McGuiness Vs Danielson at Liverpool) but that was for an ROH show. England needs its own mega event that is seen the world over and that people fly to the UK for just to witness the best perform at their best. After this weekend I can safely say that we now have such an event and its name is the King of Europe Cup.”
Featuring an all British Final between Doug Williams and Nigel McGuiness, fans were on the edge of their seats as two of England’s best ever exports went back and fourth in an incredibly heated affair. Nigel McGuiness, who won the tournament for his company Ring of Honour, had this to say about winning. “It was really a magical weekend from start to finish. All the guys had the desire to have the best match of the night and everyone tried to top one another. Normally this wouldn’t be a good thing but for this weekend and in front of the Liverpool crowd it was a truly emotional experience.” He continued “We have all worked extremely hard to now establish the King of Europe Cup as the premier event in the European wrestling calendar and I think it’s safe to say, one of the most established independent events in the world now.”
The full event is already being finalised for DVD release and will be available from Monday June 11th. This is already planning on being the biggest DVD in Indy wrestling history with both nights to be combined onto two, four hour DVD 9 dual layer disks at the amazing price of only £13.99 plus postage and packing. The release will feature all the matches from night one and night two plus nearly 2 hours of DVD bonus extras at one unbeatable price. The DVD also uses the best quality filming, sound and editing equipment of an independent show in the world courtesy of RQW. All this combines to make the official King of Europe Cup 2007 a DVD release that no fan will want to be without.
