Happy New Year and I have to say I was a little disappointed with the whole Kevin Federline angle last night. This wasn’t the Raw I was expecting. When you think of it there wasn’t one really outstanding match. But all was not lost because there were a few things that worked so well. Before I get into Raw, I want to mention two things. First I’m back to normal well as normal as I can be. My eye is fine the swelling is gone and everything feels great. Second I forgot to mention LAX when I was talking about Impact in my Saturday column. I am very impressed by Homicide. Hernandez I’m not that familiar with but he looks to have potential. Now as far as Konnan goes I have never been a fan of his but with these two guys in his stable they are another highlight of Impact. Okay now let me talk about last night’s Raw.
From the time Kevin Federline showed up on Raw I was right in there enjoying his appearances. And while I know the guy isn’t a wrestler I was really looking forward to his match with John Cena. I’m sorry to say that match just let me down so much. I could have handled Johnny Nitro paring up with Federline to take on Cena. But unfortunately the way it was booked made it come off like a total dud. I was cool with the beginning when Cena was out there waiting for Federline.
But the longer Cena waited the longer I waited and by the time something happened, oh and this is good, Comcast went to two local commercials and then back to the match. Need I tell you how pissed off I was when this happened? So I never saw the match begin, but when the show came back there was nothing really worth watching. You had to figure that Umaga would interfere along with Johnny Nitro but all in all this just came off so badly. I just wish we would have seen some decent action and a lot less stalling and interference.
Let me tell you something else that put a bad taste in my mouth. Coach a one time excellent heel is in such a bad spot right now. This so called Executive whatever it’s called is just a nothing character. So watching Federline, Nitro and Melina party was fine, but with Coach in there partying and then making a main event with Nitro, Estrada, Umaga and himself against Cena I wanted to scream. Oh yeah Cena was brutal to Coach in 2006 so because of that Coach added himself to the mix. Oh please, as soon as that match was made I was really hoping that this main event would lead off the second hour. You don’t put a match like that on as the last big match of the show, but they did, and I’ll talk about that in a little bit.
I did like the 8 man tag team match mainly because of Cryme Tyme and The Worlds Greatest Tag Team. But I will say the Highlanders and Cade and Murdoch did a good job too. This match flowed very well, and as I watched all of the participants I got the feeling that the tag team division on Raw is starting to come alive again. So Rob Conway threatened to quit Raw if he lost to Jeff Hardy. Well Hardy’s win was no surprise, in fact for some reason I turned my head and the match was over. And I read today and this is not good at least as far as I’m concerned. I read that there’s a possibility that they are going to send Conway to Smackdown to have him team back up with Sylvan and start up that miserable La Resistance again. That’s just what Smackdown doesn’t need. Hey you have to hand it to Kenny; he gave Todd Grisham a nice interview as he trashed Ric Flair. At least this guy has mic skills along with good wrestling skills.
DX gave a solid promo and really this was one of the bright spots of Raw. We again saw the serious side of DX. And how cool was it to see the Miami group with green lights making the X sign? The fans were just awesome during this segment. But back to Shawn and Hunter. They did a good job building things up for their Tag Team title match at New Years Revolution. I just loved how Shawn talked about the beatings and Hunter talked about what’s in store for Rated RKO Sunday. This all came off with a lot of passion from both men. While I was really hoping that Edge and Orton would show up during this segment I understood keeping these four away from each other until Sunday. Okay I really have nothing to say about the Melina vs. Maria match but I did like Victoria coming out and sitting with JR and The King. And she caught me off guard by making Lillian Garcia her next victim. Victoria made this segment. And Mickie saving Lillian was a nice touch too. The next match with Ric Flair and Carlito vs. Kenny and Chris Masters was probably my favorite match of the night. I’m still not a Masters fan in fact when I saw that Carlito will face Masters Sunday I actually groaned. I remember their Judgment Day match so well, and believe me not in a good way. But this tag team match was good and I wish Carlito would break that Master Lock on Sunday. Now just like Victoria surprised me with her Lillian move, I had no idea that Randy Orton would run in and RKO Flair. And then when Edge came out and joined Orton in giving Ric Flair a concerto I was speechless. This is when I thought DX would run out and so did most of the fans since they were chanting DX loudly. But again no DX and it hit me, that this is the second time that DX left the building and Flair got the concerto shot. So I’m wondering if there’s a chance that Flair will turn heel sometime soon and turn on DX. See the mind is always working, maybe not correctly but always working.
And as far as the main event goes, it was better than I expected. This baby was fast, I didn’t expect to see all the participants work as fast as they did. The fans seemed to love it. But I have to be honest with you after last night unless they can do something really good with Federline I would say that’s it with him. Maybe my expectations were just too high, and that’s no ones fault but mine. After watching Cena take out Nitro, Estrada and Coach and almost putting the STFU on Umaga, I’m wondering, now don’t laugh if Umaga wins Sunday and Cena wins the title back at the Royal Rumble. I have to really think about this one.
So not a totally disastrous Raw, but not an outstanding one either. Normally I would say I’m all ready for ECW, but I have to tell you I’m becoming very frustrated with the current product. I’m going to try to get a column out about ECW. Maybe tonight it will be worth watching, but I’m not holding my breath. I will try to get something out on ECW by the end of the week. But I definitely will have my New Years Revolution predictions ready for you by the weekend. So feel free to start sending me your predictions. I will leave you with a request. I’m thinking the song is by the Goo Goo Dolls but hopefully you guys will know for sure. Could someone please tell the name of the song they used in the “WWE – Tribute To The Troops” show.
