World Wrestling Entertainment and Total Nonstop Action’s main greeting this Christmas holiday should be “Season’s Beatings,” considering the barrage of wrestling pay-per-view shows that were presented to fans during the past month.
The whirlwind began Thanksgiving weekend with a solid “Survivor Series” card, followed up by a terrible ECW “December to Dismember” show, and last week’s TNA “Turning Point” pay-per-view — which featured the hands-on favorite for match of the year between Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle.
This long, agonizing month of wrestling overexposure ends tonight as the WWE Smackdown brand presents “Armageddon,” which takes place at the Richmond Coliseum beginning at 7 p.m.
Since fans are already sick of Batista and King Booker battling for the world title on a regular basis, RAW superstar and WWE champion John Cena is being put in the main event to team with world champion Batista as they face King Booker and Finlay.
I don’t know how good the show is going to be, but one thing is for sure, it’ll be much better than the ECW pay-per-view.
The pay-per-view will be shown locally at Fox and Hound English Pub & Grille.
Here’s the card:
# Paul London and Brian Kendrick vs. William Regal and Dave Taylor: London and Kendrick have had a great run as the longest reigning WWE tag team champions of all time, but that reign might end tonight. London and Kendrick need a quality heel team to pair up with and it seems that Regal and Taylor fit the part. Similar to America’s Most Wanted breaking up in TNA, I have a funny suspicion that London and Kendrick could split and their valet Ashley could be the catalyst.
# The Miz vs. Boogeyman: Considering his gross worm-eating behavior, I’m not a big Boogeyman fan, but I could turn the corner if he sends The Miz back to MTV Real World challenge shows.
# Gregory Helms vs. Jimmy Wang Yang: Yang will be challenging the cruiserweight champion alone, as his valet, Amy Zidian, was released. Although Helms has held the belt since January, I don’t think Yang is the guy to take the belt off him. I predict Helms’ run to continue and eventually Matt Hardy returning to singles competition and winning the title.
# Chris Benoit vs. Chavo Guerrero: One of my Christmas wishes, wrestling wise, would be for WWE Chairman Vince McMahon to give Vickie Guerrero, widow of the late Eddie Guerrero, a nice sum of money for her and the kids and get her off television. The way the company has implemented Guerrero’s death in storylines the past year has been unsettling. Chavo needs the United States title to add more heat to his character, so I’m going with Chavo to win thanks to Vickie’s assistance.
# Undertaker vs. Mr. Kennedy: Kennedy has had the upper hand on “The Dead Man” during the “No Mercy” and “Survivor Series” pay-per-views, but I don’t think the third time will be the charm for Mr. Kennedy in tonight’s last ride match.
# Kane vs. MVP: Like Kennedy, MVP’s luck should run out, with Kane getting his revenge in an inferno match.
# John Cena and Batista vs. King Booker and Finlay: There is no way Cena and Batista should lose this match. Since Cena’s match with Kevin Federline on RAW on New Year’s Day is coming up, in an over-the-top cross-promotional stunt, I could see Federline in a surprise appearance interfere to cost Cena and Batista the match. But that’s a stretch, Cena and Batista the victors.
# Three-hour RAW: USA Network will air a special three-hour live edition of RAW beginning at 7 p.m. Monday. The show will begin with all of the RAW superstars, except for Cena, battling in a battle royal, with the winner challenging Cena for the WWE title in the main event.
# Wrestling Society X: MTV’s Wrestling Society X will officially debut Jan. 30 at 9:30 p.m. Some of the wrestlers who are part of the show include Jack Evans, Matt Sydal, Teddy Hart, Vampiro and Sean “6-Pac” Waltman.
# New Haas addition: Congratulations to WWE RAW superstar Charlie Haas and his wife, TNA knockout Jackie Gayda. On Thursday at 3:01 a.m., Gayda gave birth to a 6-pound, 7-ounce, 191/2-inch girl, Kayla Jacquelyn Haas.
