I mentioned in Tuesday’s column that I would do a Smackdown column this weekend. But then it hit me that there’s an ECW pay per view, December to Dismember and I thought this will be another week without talking about Smackdown. But, and this is a big BUT, sine there are only two top matches and new matches were added late in the week, there’s no sense in spending time making this a column with my predictions. So at the end I will just give you my picks for the Extreme Elimination Chamber Match and the Hardyz vs. MNM. It’s kind of sad when WWE had this show scheduled for a while and did so little to build it up; it’s rather disappointing to me. Let me get right to another very good Smackdown, wow these shows have been so good for so long that I can’t even picture a lousy Smackdown.
I don’t have one complaint about last night’s show, maybe because the Miz wasn’t on. That probably helped but again Smackdown gave us one good match after another. Sure the women’s match with Layla vs. Krystal wasn’t outstanding, but believe me I’ve seen worse. This one was good enough with Krystal looking pretty decent out there. Now do you remember that I had a theory about Krystal joining the Boogeyman? Well I found it kind of odd that they used the Boogeyman was suspended by Theodore Long last night. Two things hit me immediately. 1. the Boogeyman is injured again. Or 2. That WWE released him. Now I could be way off with my thinking but just the fact that he returned a few weeks ago makes me wonder just what’s going on. But enough about the Boogeyman. Smackdown gave us a nice opening segment with the new World Champion Batista, a bitter King Booker and Sharmell and a very determined Fit Finlay. I’m going to say that it felt good to have a new champion last night, a new face champion. I think the timing was right for the change. I always liked Batista’s very calm demeanor. He got a great reaction from the Buffalo, New York crowd and his facial expressions definitely seemed genuine. However I also felt that when Batista was talking, and King Booker’s music hit, there was a different feeling about hearing it. At least for me there was. Instead of Booker coming out as the champion this time we saw him enter as nothing more than King Booker and I liked that. It just made his character have even more depth than normal. And listening to Queen Sharmell do her “All Hail King Booka” was fun because of the nasty tone in her voice. Last night the “champ no longer” was extremely appealing to me. Of course I can’t leave Finlay out. His point about being the number one contender since Booker never beat him was a great way to get him into the title mix. This was a nice solid opening segment and the triple threat match for the title that Theodore Long made was something I couldn’t wait to see.
I would be lying if I didn’t say I’m a teeny bit confused about MNM showing up on Smackdown. Now Michael Cole did say as their match against London and Kendrick went on that Nitro was with Raw, so I guess MNM is going to be short lived. Now I wanted to say as excited I am about MNM vs. the Hardyz’s at the ECW pay per view, and as I excited I was to see them last night I really don’t want to see Nitro end his singles career. This guy is just too talented and has shown so much on his own that I would hate to see him go back tagging with Mercury. And speaking of Mercury, Joey wrestled like he never left back in May. Of course this was one very good match, but why wouldn’t it be? Look at the four guys that participated in it, this was definitely one of the best matches of the night. With William Regal and Dave Taylor coming out to help out MNM it looks like Regal and Taylor are going to continue with London and Kendrick. The next match the title match with Batista vs. Booker vs. Finlay was one very long match, but a match where each man worked his ass off. This one had me drained and I mean that in a very good way. There was no doubt in my mind that Batista wasn’t going to lose but even though you knew Batista wasn’t loosing this match still came off very exciting.
Chris Benoit and Chavo Guerrero still have it. I liked their match last night, and if Chris Benoit is the star in the ring, then I have to say Chavo wins the mic award. I’m feeling his anger more and more each week. I think these two have great chemistry and I can’t wait to see this feud continue. And finally the Undertaker vs. MVP main event was good, I thought Taker worked another good match, and MVP didn’t look to bad either. I think what I like more than anything is that they continue to put Kane and Taker together. This is something Kane desperately needed after his character was ruined a few years ago. Just the ending with Kane and Taker closing the show worked for me. I also like it that Mr. Kennedy…. Kennedy and MVP are locked up with The Brothers of Destruction.
This was just a super Smackdown and I know I keep saying that each week but blame that on good WWE booking and not me. Okay seriously before I forget I see Bobby Lashley becoming the ECW champion, and Matt and Jeff Hardy beating MNM. I am not ordering the show and I do feel badly about that but I ordered two pay per views in November and there’s no way that I will pay for another one a week after the Survivor Series. If any of you are going to December to Dismember have a great time and for those of that that plan on ordering it, I hope it comes off well. Also Cody if you are reading this please email me, I lost your email address. Cody needed help with a question and wanted me to ask all of you for assistance, but I forgot to keep his email address, so Cody please get back to me.
