If truth be known, I had never heard of Brian Fritz or the “Between the Ropes” radio show until a few weeks ago, when a copy of this book found it’s way through my letterbox and onto my doormat.
“Between the Ropes: Wrestling’s Greatest Triumphs and Failures” is a well thought out and researched publication, a history lesson, if you will, that takes a look at the boom wrestling period of the nineties, and takes us right up to the present day, taking a look at the major players on the American wrestling scene – WWF/E, WCW, ECW and TNA.
Authors Brian Fritz and Christopher Murray come across as true fans of the wrestling business, and their knowledge of these matters is quite impressive, as they lead us on a journey through the highs and lows of the business, with some great quotes from the numerous guests that have appeared on their show over the years. They also give us an insight on how the Between the Ropes radio show began, and how it continues to grow over seven years later. In particular, the stories about awkward guests such as George “The Animal” Steele, Jake “The Snake” Roberts and the Honkytonk Man are a delight to read.
Although this book is very enjoyable, most of what is written here has already been covered extensively over the past couple of years in both the print media and on the internet. Apart from the section on the history of TNA, there isn’t really anything new here, no revelations that we haven’t heard before.
But that being said, this is a good read, but it will probably only be a book that the most hardcore of wrestling fans will want to buy.
With thanks to Turnaround for supplying a copy of this release. “Between the Ropes: Wrestling’s Greatest Triumphs and Failures” is available to buy online in the UK from www.turnaround-uk.com, and elsewhere at www.ecwpress.com.
