Was it me or was Smackdown really good last night? And was that because John Cena was there? And did you notice one top star just standing in the shadows during the main event. I bet the answers to all of these are YES. Okay now seriously for me they are but let me get into what I think was one of the best shows in a very long time. And if you don’t mind please let me tell you what I didn’t like first and I’ll make it so fast, don’t blink because you might miss it.
The Miz is just proving that he is the worst thing to hit TV. Jimmy Wang Yang makes his debut and loses. Also I never liked this gimmick and last night certainly didn’t make me warm to it at all. I thought John Cena’s opening was annoying. It’s too bad he didn’t come out with Pom Poms. I hate when they put him out there as a cheerleader to hype up the crowd and they give him such crap to talk about. Also, while there have been many times and I do mean many times that I have liked the whole King Booker stuff, I have also hated some of the skits, like last night. I was so glad when JR on Raw this past week, made mention that Booker is not a King and does not have an English accent, but that all seems to get lost on Smackdown. Hey I can take the fake British accent, but it’s Regal kissing his hand and calling him your majesty or whatever he calls him that I can’t stand. It is not funny, it’s just ridiculous. It makes Regal come off like Smackdown’s very own Eugene. Other than that the rest was all good and I do mean very good.
I feel that Smackdown really did an awesome job building toward No Mercy. While I have been somewhat impressed with Sylvester Terkay, I think I’m more impressed with Elijah Burke. I like the way this guy looks, and even though he’s only been in two matches I like what I see. And I thought Rey Mysterio and Burke did a nice job last night. No this wasn’t a long match, but I liked it I really did. I was very glad that Rey got the win on his own and that there was no interference from Chavo or Vickie Guerrero to prevent that win. I also thought after Mysterio’s win that it was a nice tough for Terkay to attack Rey; it keeps that bully character going. This was a nice opening match. I also thought the Pit Bulls vs. Idol Stevens and KC James with Michelle McCool was a very good match. I’m sure most of you know that Kid Kash was released and now that worries me. I’ve been so high on this tag team division and the Pit Bulls played a big part in my optimism and I fear now that the Pit Bulls are done things are going to start to go downhill. I hope I’m wrong about that. This was a fantastic fast paced match and we now know that Stevens and James will be facing London and Kendrick at No Mercy for the Tag Team titles.
I was thrilled to see a Matt Hardy vs. Chavo Guerrero match. Let’s face it with Vickie out there I didn’t see a Hardy win, but I what I got were two of the best high flyers putting on a very good match. Smackdown has some of the best upper mid card guys on their roster and it’s nice to see them on TV week after week. And that is finally the case with Matt Hardy. While Matt has lost many of his matches because of Gregory Helms interference it doesn’t take away from what he does in the ring. And yes Matt Hardy chalked up another loss thanks to a low blow by Vickie. But to make matters worse it was Helms that then showed up and took Hardy out with his Shining Wizard. I’m telling you let Smackdown keep giving attention to Hardy, Helms and Chavo and you’re going to get hot matches.
I was extremely happy with Mr. Kennedy…..Kennedy’s promo. I like how he came off so soft spoken and so caring about the Undertaker, when all he wanted to do was drop out of his match at the pay per view. Ah what a phony Kennedy is. And he seems to play the part very well. I was also glad to see Taker show up which made this all came off well. Now very quickly let me say again Tatanka has done an excellent job in the ring, I’m just sorry he’s stuck with Miz. Now I’m sitting watching the show thinking, I wish Vito was going to be on, yes that is true I was waiting for Vito. And I couldn’t have been happier to see him. Was it because of the stunning dress he had on or the lovely hat that he was wearing? Well seriously I don’t know why I like his character like I do but I seem to look forward to a Vito appearance each week, hey maybe he’s taking the place of the Boogeyman for me. Also now that MVP has been signed I hope he won’t disappoint. Unfortunately we have to wait until No Mercy for his in ring debut, and I say unfortunately because I won’t be ordering it. Here’s hoping that he can deliver in the ring like he does on the mic.
Finally while I hated the opening with Cena, I loved the main event and Cena was one of the reasons why. Cena along with Batista and Lashley taking on Booker, Regal and my man Finlay turned out to be one hell of a main event. Now watching Cena out there just made me feel that he would be a great addition to Smackdown. He definitely added to this main event and I really believe Smackdown would benefit greatly if he returned. Now I thought everyone in this match including my favorite little person, the Little Bastard came through; however something kind of bothered me. Remember when I asked you at the beginning, did you notice one top star just standing in the shadows during the main event? I did and I’m talking about Batista. I don’t know if this guy is in the dog house, or if he’s not totally where he should be physically since he came back in July or a little of both, but even though he did a nice job out there, it was like he was the third wheel with Cena and Lashley the top guys. You know this could be a very deliberate and temporary thing, because many feel including me that Bobby Lashley and Batista are going to go at it in the next few months. So maybe Batista is keeping a low profile for now. I just couldn’t help but notice that this one time champion seemed to have little to do out there. I also want to say I liked seeing Edge pop up and Spearing Cena. That was a nice little touch to get us ready for his cage match against Cena on Monday night.
So as you can tell this was one hell of a show, and if you go to WWE.com the matches are set for next Friday night. Booker will be facing Finlay and Lashley will be facing Batista for Your Pick Your Poison matches. Okay I will be back Tuesday with my Raw thoughts, and lets not forget about that Cage match with Edge and John Cena. Jeff Hardy vs. Johnny Nitro for the IC title will be happening. Could Monday night be the night that Hardy walks away with the title? Also I am wondering if we will get more of Eric Bischoff bashing WWE and so many of it’s superstars, AND will he be hinting about DX and the NwO one more time?
