Finally Smackdown is back at its normal timeslot. I liked the show for the most part, but yet in many ways it still seemed to drag. Whether it dragged or not there were some really nice matches on the show and because of those matches Smackdown gets thumbs up from me. Let me quickly and I do mean quickly get out what meant nothing to me and then on to the rest of a good show. By the way Montreal proved to be a great crowd for Raw but last night they were even hotter. I loved their enthusiasm so much and they really brought a lot to both shows. Oh and one more thing, I’m sure many of you know that one of my favorites was released this past week. I’m talking about the Boogeyman. I have to say I’m going to miss the gimmick very much.
I will say that the Miz wrestles better than I thought he would but this kid is just so sickening to watch that I don’t even care to waste my time about his match. While I thought it was great that the local crowd reacted to Sylvan the way they did, I have no interest in his character and this was another match that I watched but really didn’t watch if you get my drift. And the whole Layla, Krystal, Jillian thing is old. Smackdown has the makings of really showcasing some of the divas as good wrestlers, but I guess it’s a lot easier to just have tops ripped off instead. Week after week I have left out Jimmy Wang Yang. I can’t say I think much of this gimmick at all. You know there are times when the vignettes are good enough where you cannot wait to see them debut, this time it’s not working for me at all. I know what this guy can do in the ring, but the gimmick so far has left me ICE COLD. Thankfully nothing here took up tons of time and Smackdown proved again that they are the wrestling show and Raw is more of the entertainment show.
The opening match with Batista and Lashley vs. William Regal and Finlay was good, not great but good. This kept a nice pace, but I have to say this and believe me this is not against Regal because I like the man very much, but it’s Regal’s dry humor and excellent mic work that makes him so much fun to watch, and even though this guy can wrestle it seems like when he does wrestle and there is no humor involved the majority of fans lose interest in him. As I said it’s not that he hasn’t got because he does, but I think he’s made his reputation as being a hell of an entertainer out of the ring and something is just missing when he’s put in matches week after week. I hope all of that makes sense. But going back to this match, I liked watching Lashley and Batista work together because I really believe that sometime in the very near future you will see these two feud. Of course I enjoyed Finlay but I missed the Little Bastard, it’s not Smackdown without him, well it is but I could have used a Little Bastard fix to go along with this. But this was a good opening match.
The next match with Gregory Helms vs. Matt Hardy was another good one. I love having this feud; HOWEVER wouldn’t a nice storyline and some mic work build things up even better? Smackdown needs to realize that the upper mid card means a lot to the shows and it’s only right that something is written so we find ourselves really wanting to see what’s going to happen each week. As I said Helms and Hardy did a nice job here, but you never know, well at least I never know if next week both men will be back on or if they will be held off until the following week. You give them a strong angle and then you at least of consistency with Hardy and Helms. I liked Chavo vs. Rey Mysterio very much. Mysterio had his confidence back and was taking no crap from Chavo or Vickie Guerrero. You have two of the best in the business feuding with each other and really I cannot imagine Chavo and Rey putting on a bad match. With a Cage Match booked for No Mercy not having a winner last night was the way it should have been I have a feeling that the feud will come to an end at No Mercy.
I think you know how I felt about the Kendrick/London vs. The Pit Bulls vs. Stevens and James match. It was awesome. This is what Raw is missing. The tag team division is so alive right now on Smackdown. You have three tag teams that are high flyers, and just have excellent chemistry with each other. Then you go to Raw and you have the sluggish Murdoch with Cade, the Highlanders whom just don’t seem to be getting over well with the fans, Vis and Haas, and the Spirit Squad that have become so stale. You know when I see the Smackdown guys put on matches like they did last night, the first thing that hits me is, Vince McMahon will ruin things in the very near future. You know I have read so many times that Vince is not a tag team lover, why I don’t know but he’s not, and I really fear that all this great tag team action that we are getting on Smackdown will come to an end with one or two teams being split up. I hope I’m wrong because I just love watching matches like we got last night.
Finally the main event with King Booker vs. The Undertaker was another good match. Book has done a hell of a job in and out of the ring in the last few months and Taker was Taker but they worked off each other very well. JBL made a comment that is so true. He talked about how electrifying it is to see Taker in person. You can see that whenever he comes out, the fans go nuts. I’ve been lucky to see him live a few times and no matter how it looks on TV, Taker’s entrance whether he’s the Deadman or the American Bad Ass is just so cool to witness. But I liked this match. Now I thought it was a little over done with Mr. Kennedy…. Kennedy and JBL acting so scared about Taker. I understand that it goes with Taker’s character but at times seeing a smug Kennedy showing so much respect for Taker got to me. But I did like the match and for the most part Kennedy and the announce team did a good job during the match.
I liked the show and I also had no problem with John Cena showing up to thank Theodore Long for the Smackdown contract. I think it was a good move to bring up the contract because things seemed to have cooled off after Cena won at Unforgiven. So you had Cena showing his appreciation to Long and all that appreciation was a way for Long to set up next week’s Smackdown main event with Cena/Batista and Lashley vs. Finlay, Regal And Booker. I will bet that the crowd reaction for next week will be off the charts for this one. By the way how pathetic was Michael Cole gushing over this match that Long made? This guy was like orgasmic about it. Anyway I am going to try to put something out tomorrow about the latest rumors, however, I am kind of fighting something here, no not The Miz, but plugged ears and an all around miserable feeling. If I don’t get something out tomorrow, I will be back on Tuesday with my thoughts on Raw. I will leave you with a request from one of my readers. He would like to get the DX theme song. He’s looked on the web everywhere and he can’t find the information. You can email him at rapskilledmvp@yahoo.com
