I’ll admit it’s not easy to watch two hours of Smackdown late at night. No not because I didn’t like the show, but when you are gone most of the day and then come home right before the show is on it is hard to stay awake, then again I’m not exactly 25 years old. Seriously I did like the show very much, and I’m very glad I stayed up to watch it. I cannot wait until Smackdown is back to its regular time in two weeks. I cannot wait to talk about the show because I really thought it was very good.
The opening match with Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay was good but had I been there live I might have been bored for most of it, let me explain why. This match went on for about 30 minutes, but that 30 minutes also included commercials. There were times that things went a little too slow for me. However, this was a match that told a hell of a story and that story was being told not only by Finlay and Mysterio, but by JBL and Michael Cole as well. Oh and before I continue I want to say I liked how the show opened with Michael Cole and JBL on camera giving all of us a quick rundown of what’s been going on with Batista and Booker T. This was done very well because not only did it start the build up for the World title match at the end of the show, but by showing the announcers and having both of them recap things just put so much more importance on the whole feud. Now back to Mysterio and Finlay.
As I said this was a match that told a story so well on TV but live the fans would not have heard JBL and Cole constantly talk about how Rey was off his game and how Vickie Guerrero took everything out of him. All the things Cole and JBL were adding to the match just made Mysterio’s lack of defense make sense. As I said, this was beautifully done by the announcers as well as Finlay and Mysterio. Had I been there live I’m not so sure that I would have been so into this match. With the loss that Mysterio suffered and then the way he just refused to speak to the arrogant JBL at the end of the match, and then just leave like in a daze just took things further. Will Rey now take time off to repair his knee? And will this play out as if Mysterio lost his passion for the business and decides to leave? I’m thinking it’s possible and if this is what happens it’s a perfect way to give Mysterio some much needed time off.
Mr. Kennedy…..Kennedy was quite the character last night. First, I couldn’t stop laughing when he built up his unknown opponent, Danny Giamundo so well by making us think that this guy had numerous title wins and other wonderful wrestling awards. Of course it was all BS, but I did like the match, probably because I want to see jus what Kennedy has to offer each week in the ring. And after the match and Kennedy’s victory, Mr. Kennedy…. Kennedy felt that he was too good for Smackdown and called out Theodore Long to inform him that he wanted to go to Raw. His theory was if there’s a good chance Cena will come to Smackdown, then he can certainly go to Raw. After all he has beaten all the top guys on Smackdown. No cockiness there, no not at all. Unfortunately for Kennedy, he isn’t going to get that wish at least for a while, because at No Mercy Long made Kennedy vs. The Undertaker. Well with about 4 weeks until No Mercy I would say that Taker will show up maybe for one or two shows, but hey I really don’t want to get into that one. Anyway a good segment with the U.S. champion.
You know what? I really like Michelle McCool. I like her look and I think she’s a nice addition as the manager to Idol Stevens and KC James. I also like Ashley and having her team up with Kendrick and London definitely worked for me last night. I can’t tell you how much I liked this one and every participant in it. I have to say I expected the Pit Bulls to show up so I was kind of surprised that they didn’t. Speaking of Kash and Noble, you know what I would do? I would add Krystal to all of this and make her the Pit Bulls manager, and this way you would get more matches like last night’s with WWE diva’s being a part of what goes on in the ring. But back to this match, it was just what you would expect to see from your tag team division, good wrestling, a lot of action and a fast paced match. The next segment was another one that definitely worked for me. I loved the dress on Vito last night, black is definitely his color. JBL moving far a way from him Vito fit the Bradshaw character so well. After all wearing women’s clothing is contagious, at least probably in JBL mind it is. Vito was good on the mic, very relaxed and playing up this character so well with JBL and William Regal. By the way I could be way off but was Vito calling Regal Steven last night? I though I heard that a few times. Now the match with Regal vs. Bobby Lashley was okay, nothing great and I don’t think it was one of Lashley’s best but it was Vito bugging Regal that I liked most of all. Hey I still cannot stand the Miz; in fact I happened to be on the computer when he started that horrible hoo rah crap. I looked up for minute and saw him doing that robot thing and thankfully Matt Hardy came out. This guy should be a heel because it’s extremely hard to take to someone as obnoxious as he is. But as far as the match? Miz and Hardy put on a good one. As much as I don’t like this kid I can’t knock what he does in the ring. Hardy looked very good during this one and Miz came off just as well. I also loved how Bradshaw put Miz down throughout the match, as funny as it was; the things he said about Miz were very true. I knew this guy wasn’t going to lose, but at least it wasn’t a clean win over Hardy it was all because of a nasty Gregory Helms running in and interfering causing Matt the loss. But a good match and match that I have to say I’m glad I watched.
And Chavo Guerrero vs. Tatanka was another good one. I said this last week I’m starting to finally get into Tatanka’s character. I thought he and Chavo did a very good job out there and again Tatanka is having a hell of time with the ref’s calls. I’m waiting for this guy to totally snap and turn heel, but for now I’m okay with the way things have been going with Tatanka. And finally I have to say the main event with King Booker vs. Batista for the World Championship was damn good. First I totally liked how Batista and Booker were announced in the ring instead of during their entrances. That added so much to this main event. This match was so much better than what they did at Summerslam. I knew and I’m sure the majority of you new that Batista wasn’t going to win for a few reasons. One reason is that this title wasn’t going to be switched on free TV and two, with so many fans not able to get Smackdown until it goes to the CW network, there is no way that they would have had Booker lose. But even thought Booker’s win was a given there were plenty of times it looked like Batista was going to leave as the champ. I think both men put their all into this match and I’m very happy that Finlay is now a part of all of this. I liked the ending with Finlay attacking Batista. Putting Batista and Finlay in a program I think would be a good strong feud. I believe it’s a feud the fans could really get into.
Last week’s Smackdown was good, but last night’s was very good. We got a lot of solid matches and I really believe if they would give Smackdown one more major talent, like Cena or someone else Smackdown would be a hot show. So it’s on to Raw at Madison Square Garden tomorrow night. There is a six man tag team match with Jeff Hardy, Carlito and Cena vs. Edge, Randy Orton and Johnny Nitro. We also will get a Vince McMahon vs. Triple H main event match. And I’m sure that one will have Big Show causing some damage to DX. Remember this is the Raw before next week’s Unforgiven and it’s also the last Raw for Trish since I believe she’s gone after next week’s show. So we should hopefully get one HOT show tomorrow night. And just a small personal note. As you all know tomorrow is the fifth anniversary of 911. This tragedy has never left me and never will. That’s because it’s hard to believe that 5 years have gone by because it feels like it happened so recently, but I’ll be taking some time tomorrow to remember all those who lost their lives that day.
