Look what royalty can do for Smackdown. I may be in the minority, but I thought Smackdown was one of the best in a while. Sure musical chairs with the Diva’s stunk, but the new World champion, and a bunch of matches made for a very good show. In fact I don’t think there was one bad match Friday night. As I said I feel like I’m in the minority since quite a few of you emailed me with very negative thoughts about the show. Maybe after I write this I’ll have second thoughts about Smackdown being so good.
Since I missed The Great American Bash I really didn’t know what to expect with the Mr. Kennedy….Kennedy/Batista feud. But I have to say even though their opening match was short I liked what I saw. Kennedy showed a lot of life in him. He showed some fire against Batista, like he REALLY wants to get him. And Batista’s return reminds me when Hunter came back after 8 months from his quad injury. He was on but not on much, and that’s just what I’m seeing again. Batista is coming out for short stints and then that’s it. And right now I think that it working out fine. This feud is a way of getting Batista right back into the title picture. I’m going to say that there is definite chemistry here and I have a feeling that this feud will continue into Summer Slam.
Okay this might shock you but my second top match of the night for me was the following. Vito vs. Simon Dean. This was the first match where Simon Dean actually wrestled close to what he did in ECW as Nova. Both of these men were super in this match. Talk about fast paced and action filled? Yeah this was it. I was amazed by what I was watching, and like the dress or not they are giving Vito a chance week after week to be on TV, and he’s doing everything he can to show he deserves it. This match really blew me away, and maybe now Dean will finally be able to wrestle in the style that most of us remember him for. Now the next match didn’t quite do it for me. I’m talking about Sylvan vs. Tatanka. By no means was this a bad match, because it wasn’t. But Sylvan has had way too many character changes for me that I really can’t get into this new one. As I said these guys did a nice job but it’s hard to care about two characters that really have nothing going for them.
For two weeks straight the divas on Smackdown have come through. Again I like all four of these women. Krystal, Jillian, Michelle McCool and Ashley are right up there with the women on Raw. I thought Michelle did a nice job against Jillian. She showed that all the training she went through definitely paid off. I liked this match very much, and I really believe that the Smackdown diva’s have shown they are a lot more than eye candy and believe me that’s a good thing. I wasn’t that impressed with the Chavo interview probably because the only reason he was on the screen was to make us all believe that he wasn’t there live. But I’ll tell you what really annoyed me and that was Michael Cole calling Chavo Mr. Guerrero. That was just so dumb so ridiculous and I rate that right up their with those divas playing musical chairs.
Yes the entrance is long but I’m telling you I really enjoyed watching Booker’s celebration Friday night. This segment was great. You had the flower; a red carpet, balloons and a very humble Booker along with Queen Sharmell make their way out to the ring. I couldn’t even describe how Book looked during all of this but I’m telling you he’s playing this character up as much as he can. It was a fun segment and having Rey Mysterio run out and attack the King just made this even better. I think giving Booker the opportunity to hold the World Title is a good move and I really believe playing this King is just going to make his title reign a lot of fun.
Now the rumor going around is that they were going to turn Finlay face because of losing Bobby Lashley. However, WWE.com reports that Lashley has been cleared to wrestle and will be back right away. So I’m not sure if that changes the face turn for Finlay. But I saw signs of that turn in his match against William Regal Friday night.
I thought maybe Regal would be turning face, but he seemed to keep that heel persona and I saw a little warmth in the Finlay character. And it worked for me. I say that because honestly I think Finlay is playing a hell of a heel, so when I read about the face turn I was really put off by it. But it came off well Friday night and if this face turn is still on then maybe Finlay will be able to make it work. I liked the match against Regal very much and the Little Bastard always warms my heart. This was just another of my favorite matches of the evening.
If you go to WWE.com there’s a small article on Sylvester Turkay. I’ve read a few things about this guy and I’ve been dying for WWE to bring him up. I like his look very much I also like his manager Elijah Burke. His debut match against Matt Hardy was good. But it was just a way for all of us to get a look of Turkay. I think this man might bring a lot to Smackdown, and I’m very happy that we now have a chance to see him perform. As far as the main event? I liked it very much. Again since I didn’t see Mysterio vs. Booker at the GAB I felt I got a very good match on Smackdown. Booker and Rey worked very hard and this was my match of the night. I think we all saw Chavo running in and again taking out Mysterio. This is a nice push for Chavo, or should I call him Mr. Guerrero? No I’ll stick with Chavo. Chavo has all the makings of being a top Smackdown heel and with is wrestling ability I’m looking forward to Chavo’s future on Smackdown.
Okay I still feel the same way, no second thoughts here. Smackdown was an excellent show and I think we got some good WWE TV this week. So it’s on to Raw and Umaga vs. Shawn Michaels. Mick Foley will be there, now will Triple H? Well we know that there will be a major build up in the Cena and Edge feud. And with Carlito out as the number one contender for the IC title just what’s in store for him? I have a bunch of friends going to tomorrow’s super show, meaning Smackdown will be taped first and then Raw. So to those friends have a great time I think it’s going to be a very entertaining evening.
