Champions aren’t born, they are made. Sure, you may be born with some good genetics from your parents. But, it’s what you do with them that counts. As a former Division 1 assistant wrestling coach for Arizona State and Michigan State Universities, I saw a lot of young raw talent come and go. We would lose athletes for a number of reasons, such as; grade point averages being too low, injuries, financial stress, family issues, and, of course…falling in love.
I have seen athletes that were the king of the practice room but, when placed out in front of a public crowd, would choke. And, on the other end of the spectrum, I would have an athlete that could not chew gum and walk across the wrestling mat without tripping, turn into superman when placed in that same situation.
It is my opinion that it’s the practice room that makes the champion. It’s all those hours of drilling techniques until it becomes a natural reaction. It’s the mental imagery of, not only, drilling techniques in your mind, but of the consequences if you pursue ahead, and succeed, or if your opponent counters, you have to re-counter with this or that.
It’s pushing yourself to physical limits, to the breaking point, that will make you physically and mentally tougher.
