Wow there’s so much to talk about. I purposely waited today to do this column because I wanted to see the Saturday Night Main Event show. And I’m really glad I waited. This is going to be one really positive column because not only did l LIKE last night’s show but I also liked Smackdown a lot. In fact it was the best Smackdown I’ve seen in a few weeks. So let me throw out my thoughts on both shows. When I get to praise any WWE show it’s always something that makes me happy but to praise back to back WWE programming is like a bonus for me.
You know what? There was so little I didn’t like about Friday’s Smackdown. So let me just say the only negative was the Miz and the Diva’s. That segment was too long for me and as I said on Monday having to put up with the Miz twice a week now is something I’m not happy about. I had read that not only did he screw things up on Raw which we all saw, but at Tuesday’s tapings he again screwed up and they were going to have to edit his mistakes. And Vince feels the need to keep this guy on the payroll? Also the Khali and Daivari’s segment was nothing to rave about. It was nice of Taker to show up after being off of TV for so long. I’ve lost count how long it’s been. But even with the Undertaker there, this was a nothing segment. But enough of that on to the rest of a very good Smackdown.
As much as I enjoy Booker T and Sharmell’s out of the ring segments and I do, I’m getting a little tired of this whole lengthy entrance of King Booker. I understand it’s all being done with humor, but it’s just too long for me. This could all be done in half the time and we still could take in Booker’s facial expressions and hear William Regal chant “Oh Hail King Booker.†My point to all of this is I thought the opening was okay. Once I got passed the whole entrance thing I thought Book’s promo building up his feud with Rey Mysterio was done well. And Rey showing up just made things even better.
I would say my match of the night was Matt Hardy vs. Mr. Kennedy…..Kennedy. There is no doubt in my mind that these guys definitely have chemistry and I think the fans at the arena felt it too. They were so into this match. By the way, I thought the Minneapolis, Minnesota crowd was awesome. And as I said they were totally into Hardy vs. Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy…..Kennedy looked very good here and it’s always great to see Matt Hardy in a match with a good opponent. My next favorite match was Jamie Noble vs. Paul London. You had four guys during this match that I think we all know can produce and produce brilliantly in the ring. Ye it’s unfortunate that the Mexicools were broken up because with the Pit Bulls, and London and Kendrick the tag team division would at least have a good start of becoming worth watching again. Noble and London never looked better during this match and I would hope that next week when London and Kendrick take on the Pit Bulls with their titles on the line that they will be given plenty of time to put on a 5 star match.
I always cringe when I see there’s going to be a contract signing. But I liked Batista’s and Mark Henry’s signing. First of all Batista is so OVER that the reaction he got was just fantastic. Second, Batista was on fire and even though both men didn’t go at it you definitely could feel the tension between these two. Henry came off fine on the mic. And things got heated up when Mark Henry through the contract at Batista and Batista went nuts by attacking the table. I liked this because it had action and the time that was given couldn’t have been more perfect. Now on a side note, I’m not sure how many of you have seen on WWE.com that Mark Henry was seriously injured last night during his match in the 6 man tag team match. Go to the site and you can read about his injured knee. He’s going to be out for a several months. Okay yes, for MANY months I’ve put Henry down for being the top heel on Smackdown, but in the last few weeks I have praised him because he has really stepped up and even with his limited ability in the ring he has come off as a cocky piece of crap. And that’s a compliment believe me. I’m very sad to see that this happened to him and I really believe that he deserves a lot of praise for playing the top heel consistently. I wish Henry a speedy recovery.
I am shocked yet okay with Fit Finlay beating Bobby Lashley and becoming the new U.S. champion. When I read the spoilers I just couldn’t believe that they would take the title off of Lashley so soon, but they did and I feel Finlay definitely is worthy of the title. Not only were two of my favorites Lashley and Finlay going at it but the Little Bastard showed up and clocked Lashley with a shillelagh. This was just another good match on the show and I have a feeling there will be a rematch at the Great American Bash with these two guys. You have to hand it to Vito for walking around wearing a dress. I have to say he seems to be taking this well and I get a kick of watching him go out in public without over doing it. I sure hope that in the near future this will pay off very well for Vito.
Finally the main event with Rey Mysterio vs. William Regal was okay. This wouldn’t have been my main event but it was a decent match. With Booker T taking on Rey next week they have to keep Booker away from Rey so putting Regal in was only fitting. I now feel with Mark Henry out the title match at the GAB will be a triple threat match with Batista added. That’s just my opinion. Anyway thumbs up for a good show this past Friday night. And now let me quickly hit the SNME which I’m going to do out of order.
I thought the two hours flew by. While the Khali/Big Show segment did nothing for me it was a way to bring Taker in and for Taker to accept the challenge from Show to appear on ECW for the ECW title. The Diva Bull-riding segment was basically done prior to the show and I think I would have had Michelle McCool and Victoria’s segment taped as well since it really didn’t do anything for the show. Unlike Raw, DX worked for me last night. I laughed hard when they were dubbing in Vince and the Squad’s voices. It was so typical of DX. As far as the match? I hope that’s the last time we see the Spirit Squad vs. Shawn and Hunter. The match was okay, but I was really hoping with the cages on both sides of the ring that during the match one of the members of DX would have ended up in there, and then maybe he would have found a way to sneak out and come back in and help take the rest out. You know something like that, but that never happened, DX was in control the whole time. Here’s what I would like to see. Since the Spirit Squad can’t seem to beat DX, Vince is now so PISSED them that he no longer will use them to help battle HBK and HHH. Which will then put the five guys in a new program. Then the squash match last night I can understand.
The six man tag team match with Batista/Rey and Lashley vs. Booker/Mark Henry and Fit Finlay was good. I totally missed how Mark Henry got hurt, I don’t know how I missed it since I was watching but I totally didn’t see it happening. It’s good to have Batista in the ring and just like the crowd at Smackdown, last night’s Dallas, Texas crowd went nuts for this guy. His return is a big plus for Smackdown. I thought the tag team match with Carlito/Trish vs. Melina and Nitro never got started. This could have been good had it not been rushed. Another rushed match and I mean rushed was Sabu vs. Stevie Richards. This had the makings of something really good. The little we got had me very interested. It would have been nice to let this one have a lot more time.
Cena vs. Edge was a good match, a match you would see on Raw. I did not expect Edge to lose so there was nothing shocking about this one. I have to say props to Cena for aiming perfectly with Edge’s F’U onto the announce table. He hit it right on target. And finally as much as I’m not a Hogan fan, everything with him was done well. He opened the show with Brooke but said very little because Randy Orton came out. And then we saw Brooke and Hulk Hogan leaving but Randy came out and RKO’d Hogan right on the trunk of his car. That was cool to see. I liked the way this was done last night. No I didn’t like Brooke’s video and probably never will, but her flirting with Randy and Orton coming on to her was great. And then when he RKO’d Hogan Brooke naively asked Randy what happened. But he just smiled and didn’t answer. I would love to see Brooke do a Stephanie McMahon and turn on her father like Steph did to Vince back in 1999 with Hunter. Whether that happens or not I liked the way this feud started out and let’s see how things continue to play out. I just read that the ratings for SNME are worse than the show in March. I’m wondering if what we saw last night will be the last SNME for a very long time. Well whatever I still liked the show a lot.
Tomorrow on Raw I’m imagining Vince will have plenty to say to DX since he was super kicked by Shawn and The Spirit Squad lost another match. I would think Cena would have a few choice words for Lita, because of her interference during the main event at the SNME. And if Brooke and her dad are back on tomorrow night that’s fine as long as it continues to make Orton look like a scumbag. I’m hoping for a much better Raw than last week’s show. Okay let me leave you with the following request from a reader. Remember when Chris Jericho was champion? There was a promo song/video that played and I think the title was King of my World or something. Could you please ask your readers where I can find that song?
