Smackdown last night took me by surprise. I read the spoilers and didn’t think much of the show, however my mind quickly changed once it hit TV, and I thought this was one of the BEST Smackdown’s in a very long time. The show worked for me from beginning to end. As of late Smackdown hasn’t been a show that I looked forward writing about, but today I can’t wait to share my very positive thoughts with you. Oh by the way did you notice I did not put a column out about the ECW show? I bet you know why.
Never in my wildest dreams did I expect Vince McMahon to totally give the ECW and even WWE fans such crap as I did this past Tuesday night. Now I’m telling you I know today’s ECW is going to be different and I can live with that, especially after being so happy with One Night Stand. But ECW Tuesday night was a catastrophe, it was atrocious and I will give it a couple of more weeks but if it continues to come off as pathetic as this past week’s show then I’m done. I will not waste any more time on it. Okay one more thing. After what we were given I’m starting to believe that Vince wants ECW dead and buried. I would think he would want to make money but now I’m starting to wonder if this is Vince’s way of destroying not only ECW fans but ECW wrestlers. I hope to God I’m wrong about this.
Now onto a more pleasant subject. Smackdown is without Batista, Kurt Angle, and the late Eddie Guerrero just to name a few. However last night the show managed to work so well without the major names out there. Rey Mysterio vs. Gregory Helms was the opening match. And this was a super match. You know a couple of years ago this was a cruiserweight match, but now that Rey is the World Champion and Helms is the Cruiserweight champ this really was to see who came off as the top champion. And because you had two champions in there it put so much more importance on this match. Of course it helps that there is instant chemistry between Helms and Mysterio. Both men looked so good in the ring. This was by far my match of the night. But a close second and I mean a close second was Finlay and William Regal vs. Matt Hardy and Gunner Scott. Oh did like this one. There were many things that impressed me during the match. One was Gunner Scott. I really do like his look, and if this guy gets a good push I can totally understand why. He has the look, and he seems to have some good skills out there. I thought Matt Hardy looked refreshed and much focused last night. Maybe because we don’t get much of him on TV it’s like you forget just what he can bring to the show. But he fit in perfectly against Regal and Finlay. Finlay oh please I can’t say enough good things about him. I think its official I’m a FINLAY FANATIC. Regal did a very good job wrestling and fit in as Finlay’s tag team partner so well. This was an awesome match and to top things off, I guess Finlay’s midget is now called the Little Bastard. Hey that made my night.
Well maybe not my night, but the Little Bastard I guess fits him and I’m still enjoying this character. He’s like a rabid dog on an attack and I get a kick out of watching Finlay manhandle the guy. This was just another hot match last night. Mr. Kennedy….Kennedy again makes me laugh when he announces himself. You know you would think by now it’s old yet it’s still so funny. He took out a jobber but looked good doing it. I cannot see how they can make this guy a top heel when the crowd and so many of us wait for him to do his thing. I know I mentioned this during my Wrestlemania weekend, but when he did that at the brunch and he did it a few times everyone just laughed, and he would laugh and he couldn’t believe how he would get that same reaction every time. But he does and I’m telling you if the Mr. Kennedy things continue look for him to be a face so the fans can announce right with him. There were two segments that normally might piss me off or do nothing for me, but last night I think they were done well. One was Khali taking out Super Crazy. Now mind you normally I would be bitching about a man his size taking out two Cruiserweights. But I looked at this not as a squash, but as a way to break up the Mexicools. Psicosis did not have Super Crazy’s back and walked out on him. Hey I’m fine with this because if Smackdown gave us a Psicosis vs. Crazy feud I would be very happy. Another segment that you know would bug the crap out of me but didn’t was Chavo Guerrero interacting with Mark Henry. Mark Henry did decent mic work and I liked the way he bullied Chavo. Chavo standing up to Henry was also effective and honestly this was a good segment. Hey really it’s me writing this not a Linda Robin imposter. As I said everything worked well for me last night.
I even liked “I’m better than you areâ€, Michelle McCool and Ashley’s little backstage segment. And then keeping with Real Men wear dresses was Vito beating a jobber. Now I know they showed a video with Vito working out in a dress, well yesterday I also read that he is wearing a dress no matter where he goes to keep this gimmick going and supposedly he has no problem with this gimmick. So maybe that’s why watching Vito is something I really like. And the main event was good, not great but good. I’m a Finlay Fanatic and a Lashley Liker. I like the fact that Lashley is not only looking good as a wrestler, but that when he shows up the fans seem to pop big for him. This match was good and it topped off one very hot Smackdown. Okay so maybe the Miz still got on my nerves but other than that Smackdown was a hit.
Now I left JBL for last. I won’t lie to you when he announced last week that he was taking Tazz’s place I didn’t like it. And when he came out last night and was focused on camera so heavily during the Mysterio/Helms I was pissed, I figured oh great now it’s going to be all JBL for two hours and it’s wrong. I have to say after the first match, I thought things kind of worked with JBL. He wasn’t on the camera much at all and he seemed to do okay with his commentary. I thought he came off much better than I expected. I’m still not sure he’s the man for this job but I’m not dead set against him either. I was content with the way he handled things and I do feel that he and Michael Cole worked well with each other. This is a situation where time will tell if JBL was the right pick, but as of now I’m fine with it.
Okay DX is back and I can’t wait until Monday night. I would imagine having DX back will make for some humorous TV. It’s now Cena vs. Sabu and Edge vs. RVD at Vengeance and we know from that piece of garbage show on Tuesday that ECW will be invading Raw. I can’t say that I’m exactly doing cartwheels after that since the WWE guys are made to look a lot more dominant than anyone from ECW. But with this the last Raw until the pay per view here’s hoping that Vince gets his act together. One of my readers Paul was nice enough to send the following: The new ECW show on Sci-Fi in America will be broadcast on Sky Sports 3 on Sunday night at 10:00 pm.
