If you build it, he will come.
It’s really a very logical statement, and certainly an easy to grasp idea. If it can work for Kevin Costner in the movie Field of Dreams, why can’t it for WWE?
Last week’s slightly improved episode of Monday Night RAW, as well as WWE’s push and booking of their 10/3 program proves one thing – everything is possible and doable, if you care. In the past three years, the problem in the company seems to be that nobody cared. Things are done based on what’s easier to do for the short term, and how to get from point A to point B in thirty seconds. It is absolutely sad to just think how much more money Vince and Co. could have made and how much better of a shape the business could have been in right now, if instead WWE thought how to get from point A to the much better and further point Z.
You see, you didn’t have to watch the entire show last week. If you watched only 15 minutes of it, any 15 minutes of it, you would have known that on 10/3, WWE RAW is having a huge three-hour event, featuring tons of top names from the business. Build it and they’ll come. And they will. Eric Bischoff vs. John Cena is not a good match for 10/3, but that’s okay. At least it’s announced. Edge vs. Hardy in what should be their final match is a good bout. However, everything else going on for that show has been hyped through the roof.
Now imagine if they did this for every PPV. If the matches were announced ahead of time, and the storylines were built towards the PPV date carefully, and thought out thoroughly; if the promotion and hype was always that big, and if they could get you to tune in just based on 15 minutes of TV you saw on Monday night. I’m a Math major, but plese, you do your own calculations.
The WWE.com RAW preview makes a note that Mr. McMahon will be at RAW tonight. They start off by talking about his major announcement last week that WWE Champion John Cena will be defending his WWE Championship against Eric Bischoff at WWE Homecoming. The site also wonders if Bischoff will have something up his sleeve for Cena this week, before their big bout in seven days on USA. I don’t think doing this match is too smart, but I’m sure they’ll have some twist to it. Although I dislike it, I realize that they want to make Cena/Angle special by not giving it away on free television, and that’s a smart move. Perhaps they should have involved someone else into the storyline, but since Bischoff has been at it with Cena in this Austin-McMahon like storyline, and with both Austin and McMahon at the show, who knows!
The preview then goes on to talk about Chris Masters’ attack on Ric Flair last week, as well as the damage done by Carlito. We should get some kind of reaction from the IC Champion this week, as far as to what happened. I don’t know if they’re going to do a tag match again (Flair/Michaels vs. Masters/Carlito), but I hope they will go that way with this to save it, although Carlito wrestling is totally fine by me.
The RAW preview ends with the question of what will Matt Hardy and Edge do one week before their loser leaves RAW match! I must say this storyline has had its ups and downs, but I’m glad it’ll be over in a week. It’s not that it’s bad (and I’m not saying it’s bad, nor am I saying it’s good), I simply feel both Hardy and Edge should be doing bigger things. I’m guessing Hardy will be headed to SmackDown!, which is a good thing because there’s no space for him on RAW, and he should be utilized to the fullest, and there’s potential for that on Friday nights.
Elsewhere, I’m expecting Trish’s return to continue with full blast, as well as what’s next with the tag champs. Expect a lot of segments or matches to set up bouts for the big 10/3 show. Let’s hope it’ll be a fun night.
