Last week Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio were the two top stars on Smackdown. And last night Eddie continued to shine and shine big as he managed to heat up his feud with the missing Rey Mysterio. I liked Smackdown last night and I really was happy that they focused on The Great American Bash. It was a good show, a much better show than I thought it would be. Okay before I get into Smackdown, I just want to let you all know that I will be taking a week off starting this coming Sunday. My husband will be home and while we aren’t going out of town hopefully we will not be around too much. But I will be back a week from Sunday with my Great American Bash predictions. I wouldn’t want to miss that. Okay now onto Smackdown.
Granted I think most of us watch Raw and Smackdown for the wrestling and last night just like with Raw there wasn’t much of that but one man that did an awesome job on the mic was Eddie Guerrero. While many of you have emailed me telling me that you are tired of the Mysterio/Guerrero feud, and I really thought that both men would have moved on, you can’t take away what Eddie has given the fans in the last few weeks. His intensity on destroying Rey has really held my interest. And last night was no exception. I have no idea what the secret is and it could turn out to be a huge let down. But this whole angle has been extremely interesting due to some top acting by Rey and Eddie. Last night having Eddie’s wife and his daughters coming out to stop him from revealing the secret surprisingly worked for me. Trust me I don’t need to have family members included in storylines, but Eddie’s wife trying to reason with him and watching his daughters look so fearful of Guerrero was another way of making this all seem “real.” Remember this is sports entertainment and I have been pleasantly entertained by all the players involved with this angle.
We finally got to see the Mexicools in action against Paul London, Funaki and Scottie Too Hottie. Now I’m not taking a thing away from Scottie and Funaki but when these two guys came out with London did you most of you say to yourselves, look how thin this division is since they released Billy Kidman, Akio, Shannon Moore and Spike Dudley? I know I thought that very same thing. But I will say this was a very good match, and Scottie and Funaki fit in well. I was very pleased with the Mexicools debut in the ring and this was my match of the night. For those of you that saw the match and saw Juvi do the 450 Splash on London you also saw him knee London’s face. If you go to WWE.com, there is an interview with London and yeah he took a major hit to his face that night, so if you can check that out. But again this was a very good match. Captain Charisma was quite the smooth talker with Candice backstage. The more Christian talks the more I would love to see him get a lot more TV time. Christian was Mr. Charming and he offered to give advice to Candice about the Smackdown locker room. That’s because Christian told the diva that the Smackdown locker-room looked up to him.
Christian’s bragging brought Booker and Sharmell over and Book told Christian that if he wanted respect he had to earn it. And this appealed to me because now it’s a Christian/Booker feud, and I think the fans will definitely benefit from that. And we would get more of these two guys a little later on. Batista was interviewed by Josh Matthews. I won’t say it was the BEST interview done by Batista but it was okay and he put JBL in his place and made it clear that Batista was walking out the champion at The Great American Bash. This wasn’t a bad segment but I’m happy to say that things between JBL really improved during the main event. My favorite actress and I’m sure most of yours, Torrie Wilson was back on. And when Melina was putting her down, Torrie made those awful facial expressions you know like are you saying that about me? And trying to look surprise. I have to say I liked Melina in this and I think in time she will become a natural on the mic. So it’s a bra and panties match at the GAB. I would much rather see Melina show her wrestling ability but I guess this will add a little fun for all you guys that order the show or see it live.
Let me keep this short. After MNM came out and beat upHeidenreich, Animal from The Road Warriors came out and cleaned house. Now when I started watching the WWE Animal and Hawk were gone. I have nothing to base Animal’s appearance on. I know that WWE released the Road Warriors DVD and what better way to hype the DVD then buy bringing the only surviving member out. I think it’s great for their fans to have an Animal appearance. But that’s when my positive demeanor ends. To team Heidenreich with Animal and put them on the GAB for the tag team titles against MNM kills me. I still feel that Heidenreich is a waste of space on TV and it really gets to me that again he’s getting pushed and shoved into this pay per view. So honestly this segment didn’t do much for me because Vince’s bad choice of putting Heidenreich out there killed my enjoyment.
Eddie Guerrero vs. Bob Holly was next. Now when Eddie was giving his family a hard time backstage and yelling at his wife, it was Bob Holly to the rescue. We got the soft side of Holly and he tried to stop Eddie’s verbal abuse toward Vicky. First Holly pushed Eddie and then Eddie retaliated. So Theodore Long set up this match. I expected a lot more from this. I felt it really took time getting started, and it wasn’t until the end that things really picked up. Holly and Eddie worked a hard match, but as I said it took a while for it to get exciting. Naturally Eddie won, well why wouldn’t he? He slammed Holly’s knee with a pipe and then Holly tapped out when Eddie finished him off with the Texas Cloverleaf. By no means was this a horrible match just not the match I thought it would be. After the match Eddie got on the mic and apologized to his wife. He was also bleeped out a lot for saying a few choice words. He then said to make it up to Vicky he would do this if Rey wins then the secret is safe. However should Eddie win then all bets are off.
So UPN didn’t want Hassan and Daivari to be on this week since their segment caused controversy last week due to the London bombings. So they sent out their lawyer to read a statement. And the funniest thing about this was that each time the statement said that Hassan would not be back on Smackdown the very loud Worcester crowd cheered. I got a real kick out of that. All of this brought out the Undertaker. He came out choke-slammed the attorney and then hit the old Tombstone on him. A segment that was okay mainly because this was another week that Taker showed up and I think that is so important since he’s got this pay per view match coming up. The Booker T vs. Christian match was next and it was really nothing more than a nice tease for their match at the Great American Bash. This mini match lasted for just a few seconds. Christian ran out and surprised Booker and by the time they got in the ring Christian did his famous move the Unprettier on Book, and got the win. That was it but I bet you that next week both of these men will give the fans what they want to see at the GAB. Okay here are all the things I liked about the main event. The fans seemed totally into this match. We didn’t hear from JBL throughout the whole show. And we did get a promo from him it was short but I found it to be very effective. I love how it killed him to talk about his loss to the Blue Meanie. It was like so demeaning to him. He came off really well. I have to admit that I have been a little tired of his long promos so this was a nice change of pace.
Now one thing that I noticed was that even though it was Orlando Jordan facing Batista, Jordan didn’t speak and just stood there. Jordan did okay against Batista, he got a few good moves it, but my eyes were really focused on the champion. First he got a super reaction by the fans and second I just feel like he’s learned so much. No, he’s not the wrestler of the year, but he’s come a long way and just like in his Hell In A Cell match at Vengeance, Batista is putting in some good facial expressions and selling much better than he did months ago. As much as I miss Batista on Raw, I think Smackdown and Batista are a match made in heaven. Batista won but couldn’t enjoy it, because JBL hit Batista with the clothesline from hell. Again JBL looked good taking Batista out and holding the championship belt over Batista’s lifeless body.
The main event capped off a good show and hopefully next week they will continue to hype the Great American Bash so well that the show might turn out to be a successful pay per view. Don’t forget to check out http://www.dory-funk.com/bang-tv.html, and check out some of Dory’s students. Remember who knows who will end up in the WWE or TNA. There are a bunch of different shows you can view. And one has Carlito’s dad Carlos in a match against Dory. Now I want to leave you with this. A friend of mine emailed me the other day with a very interesting theory about the Montreal screw job. He asked if I would post it, but then you would all miss out on my one of my columns. Seriously we both came up with this idea. If anyone would like to read it you can email Ben at TGIceMan32@aol.com He will be very happy to share it with you and then you can email Ben and tell him what you think. Okay everyone have a great weekend and a very nice week and I’ll be back next Sunday, the 24th with my GAB predictions
