I can’t say Smackdown was a bad show, because it wasn’t. But I will say without Kurt Angle, John Cena and even Carlito, I did feel like something was missing. But with a very strong main event, and the introduction to a new stable and a new title, Smackdown worked for me. Okay let me start with what for me was the cream of the crap and then it’s all good. But before I get into the show, I have to really give out a huge thank you to all of you that came through for me by helping two of my readers get answers to their questions. Because of such a great response I was able to give both these guys information in finding Cena’s Reebok’s and The Toothless Aggression t-shirt. I asked for help on both of these matters because you have never let me down when I needed help, so thank you again. Okay now onto Smackdown.
There was only one segment that I despised last night. I have to be extremely honest with you. I am burning that they could take MNM and put them out there in a worthless match with John Heidenreich. That match not only was un-necessary but it just shows that the WWE has almost done the same thing to the tag team division that they have done to the women’s division, KILLED IT. MNM caught on immediately and has really looked good each week, but instead of rewarding their fans with a meaningful tag team match Joey Mercury is stuck with a guy who is known only for looking for a friend, he’s certainly not there for his wrestling ability. This really did piss me off and I have a horrible feeling that this is not over yet, and as I said last week I see Eugene going to Smackdown and teaming up with Heidenreich. But after last night’s performance in the ring I feel Vince really needs to send him back to OVW and work on one thing, his wrestling.
Now for all the positives about Smackdown. I thought Randy Orton did a nice job in the opening segment. You can tell he’s a long way off from wrestling because he’s way too thin. But his mic work came through as he got us all waiting for his rematch with the Undertaker. As far as Taker goes, the man is so loved by the live crowd that when Taker’s video hit and the lights went out the crowd just went nuts. It’s hearing that reaction that gets me hyped for the man as well. Even thought Orton was able to escape from Taker once Taker surprised him in the ring, the feud as far as I’m concerned got off to a strong start. I totally loved the part where Randy standing up on the ramp told Taker that he would not face Taker on his terms, and Taker replied in that deep voice that he has, “death waits for no one,” and with that a bolt of lightening hit right near Randy. This was a cool touch to end things for the night and I hoping that even though Orton can’t wrestle we will see Taker more often as this feud gets built up.
Next week it’s Melina vs. Michelle McCool. Now here’s my take on this one. I don’t know how Michelle is doing with her training but she can’t be any worse than Heidenreich. Okay I won’t say his name anymore in this column, but Melina I have always read is really good in the ring, she’s something to see. So this match I am looking forward too. It could turn out to be a dud, but I would like to think that Michelle has been working hard to put on a fairly decent match. Now here’s where things get interesting. Chavo vs. Paul London was a good match but like so many other cruiserweight matches this was cut short. But this time I didn’t mind the interruption, because we were all treated to a brand new stable, The Mexicools. I guess with Carlito off Smackdown and his “that’s not cool” phrase is off the show, Juvi, Super Crazy and Psicosis decided to make that part of their name. I’m only kidding here. The name granted might not be the COOLEST, but I think these three guys are going to make Smackdown a must see show especially when they are on. The thing that Vince has to do is keep these guys on Smackdown on a regular basis. This stable and the cruiserweights need to be a big part of the show. I’m so worried that all of this will die fast and Juvi, Super Crazy, Psicosis and the majority of the guys in the Cruiserweight division will become regular fixtures on Velocity. You have no idea how wrong I hope I am with this statement. I was very pleased with the segment that included JBL, Booker, Chris Benoit, and Big Show. I have to say that Smackdown did a super job making us believe that the WWE belt is no longer a part of Smackdown. I liked watching each guy starting with JBL, then Book, Benoit and Big Show making their own matches with the idea that each one would be the new champion. Theodore Long came out and announced that there will now be a Smackdown Title. The name doesn’t send me it sounds kind of cheesy, but Long made a special five man challenge with the Undertaker added to the match and the winner is the new Smackdown champion. Okay I can live with this, but I guess Smackdown’s newest draft pick Hassan had some trouble with Long’s decision. Yes, Hassan and Daivari are now with Smackdown. Hassan is still not a happy camper and he did his shtick and complained that again he has been over looked. He also insulted Benoit. Booker and really gave it to Big Show. After a lot of complaining Theodore added Hassan to the Smackdown Title match. It is now a 6-man elimination match. After the new announcement by Long, JBL, Booker, Benoit and Big Show took care of Daivari and Hassan. And because of the way that Hassan got in Big Show’s face, Long at that moment made a Big Show vs. Hassan match.
Well I missed this one, again a phone call, I did catch a little but I missed Matt Morgan with Michael Cole and Tazz. I don’t think I missed much meaning that Big Show wasn’t going to prevail not with Daivari out there. Here’s what I hope happens with Hassan. I hope he gets to wrestle a lot. I think he has potential but he just didn’t wrestle enough on Raw. I would like to think that this move on Smackdown will give Hassan a chance to prove that he belongs on TV. And Daivari should have the chance to show his stuff in the Cruiserweight division. I don’t think Smackdown at least for now will prosper with the new acquisitions but maybe in time they will make a nice impact on Smackdown. Now for the highlight of the show, the main event with Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio.
First Rey did a sweet promo about Eddie during the first half of the show. Rey kind of lost his cool demeanor when talking about getting redemption. And later on Eddie came back with a small promo about Rey not knowing what Eddie is capable of. All this was the start to what turned out to be a fantastic main event. This was just about a 30 minute pay per view match. This was their best match yet. I’m telling you when you get a match that takes a half an hour and it’s done as well as this was it just makes you so glad that you didn’t miss the show. I am so proud of both of these men for what they gave the fans last night. I expected a good match maybe even a great match but Smackdown’s main event was a good as it gets.
Yeah the star power is gone, but Rey and Eddie saw to it that Smackdown is not going down without Cena or Angle. Juvi, Super Crazy and Psicosis gives me hope that we are going to see some of the best cruiserweight matches ever, and that the cruiserweights are now a major part of Smackdown and whether the WWE title comes back or not, Smackdown will take pride in having it’s own title. Okay I’ll be back on Sunday with my pay per view predictions, keep yours coming and I see right now a pattern. Hunter over Batista seems to be what most of you are sending me. And Jericho over Cena seems to be the popular vote right now. You can see what I think on Sunday and remember they will all be right. Okay you can stop laughing now.
