Big News: Kurt Angle won a battle royal and won the right to face Sharmell
next week on Smackdown, passing up the opportunity to face John Cena for the
WWE Title.
Turns/Title Changes: None.
Best Match: MNM vs. Holly & Haas
Worst Match: Carlito vs. Big Show by default
Line of the Night: “ECW can kiss my ass!” – Kurt Angle
Show Details: They showed clips from Cena/JBL at Judgment Day. Carlito
started the Cabana and bragged about beating the Big Show at JD all by
himself, but said he couldn’t have done it without the support of Matt
Morgan. They showed the clip of Morgan giving Show the F5. Carlito said he
could beat Big Show on Judgment Day, Mother’s Day, Groundhog Day or any day
for that matter. Teddy Long entered and plugged the Draft Lottery. He made
it clear Carlito only beat the Big Show because of Morgan, which Morgan
didn’t like. Teddy said if Morgan put his hands on him, Morgan would be
“s-s-s-suspended”. He said since next week will be the last night for some
members of Smackdown, there would be a “Winner’s Choice” Battle Royal where
the winner gets to face whoever they want. Carlito said he’s in, and if he
wins, he wants to face John Cena. Carlito figured he’s taken one title from
Cena before and he’ll do it again. Teddy Long put Carlito in a rematch
against Big Show for tonight. Entertaining segment, but I’m not sure what
purpose the “Cabana” actually serves any more.
MNM vs. Hardcore Holly & Charlie Haas – WWE Tag-Team Championships
The illegal Nitro gave Holly a cheap shot before the match but Holly was
able to come back with a back dropkick on Mercury. Mercury sent Holly to the
mat with a couple of chops in the corner. Holly came back with about ten
chops of his own. Holly hit his kick to the lower region with Mercury
hanging over the top and tagged in Charlie Haas. Haas propped Mercury up by
the arm and then sent him to the mat face first. Mercury was able to push
Haas to the corner and he tagged Nitro. Nitro came off the top rope but Haas
met him mid-air with standing dropkick. Man I miss watching Charlie Haas.
Haas used an inverted atomic drop but Mercury tripped Haas from the outside
and they went to commercial.
After the break, the heels hit a double rib breaker on Haas. Mercury hit a
Northern Lights Suplex but Haas kicked out. The crowd started chanting “We
want Holly”. Haas tried to jump over a bent over Nitro to tag Holly, but
Nitro caught him and pushed him to the heel corner. Melina smacked Haas and
Holly chased everyone out of the ring. As they were playing cat and mouse,
Nitro and Mercury would jump in the ring and kick Haas whenever they had a
chance. Haas hit a belly to belly suplex and tagged in Holly. Holly cleaned
house hitting a full nelson slam to Nitro and a dropkick to Mercury. Holly
hit a clothesline off the top, but he nailed the referee in addition to
Mercury. Holly hit the Alabama Slam on Mercury but Patrick was still down.
Nitro hit Holly straight in the head with a chair, which a barely conscious
Patrick saw, so MNM was disqualified. After the match, Haas chased away MNM
with the chair. Great match and the reactions from Haas after the match made
the Tag Titles seem important.
Booker T and Sharmell did an interview backstage and the footage of Sharmell
slapping around Angle was shown. The only note worthy item coming out of
this interview was Sharmell suggesting it’s not long before Booker is WWE
Champion.
Cena came out to a big pop and was walking slowly because of the injuries
sustained at JD. Funny, Cena was on Much Music earlier today and he seemed
just fine. Cena stood in the ring as the crowd chanted his name, to which
Cena replied “Thank you”. He said there were people who didn’t believe in
him as Champion, but he proved all those people wrong by not saying “I
Quit”. He said JBL was right about making Cena bleed, but JBL was wrong
about taking the WWE Title. But, Cena said he has something for JBL. This
brought out Bradshaw, who walked out in more pain than Cena. JBL didn’t have
any excuses and said Cena was the better man Sunday. JBL said Cena is on a
roll, with his CD and movie (which is the first mention of Cena’s movie).
But, JBL said Cena would crash because he’s burning both ends of the candle,
and his success will run out fast. Cena said he doesn’t care about leaving a
“legacy”. He said the people decide JBL’s legacy, which doesn’t much sense.
Cena said he was going to play a tribute video for JBL, but now he won’t.
JBL repeatedly asked for Cena to show the video, so Cena finally did after
the crowd wanted it to be played. It was just JBL saying “I quit” over and
over again. This segment started out fine, but it dragged on too long.
Carlito Caribbean Cool w/Matt Morgan vs. Big Show
Show was all over Carlito before Morgan tried to interfere. Morgan was
thrown out and Carlito was left alone. Show was about to hit the Choke slam
but Carlito raked his face. Carlito gained some offence but was caught off
the ropes by a choke slam and Big Show picked up the win. Immediately after
the match, Morgan attacked Big Show and gave him an F5 on the announce
table. Tazz and Cole said they’ve never seen anybody do something like that
to the Big Show. I can think of one guy.
They showed the ECW segment from RAW, but they didn’t edit out all the lies.
So on RAW, they do the big angle we’ve never seen before, and they show the
recap on Smackdown.
Angle came out for the Invitational. He was embarrassed after losing to an
inferior man at JD, and getting slapped around by Booker’s gutter slut wife.
Angle also said McMahon was flushing his money down the toilet by doing the
ECW PPV. He said ECW was garbage and a disgrace to the real wrestling he
stands for. Angle said he would buy a bunch of tickets and lead volunteer
Smackdown guys to bury ECW, just like Bischoff. Angle told Tazz he would
bounce around the ECW guys the way Paul Heyman bounces checks. Tazz took off
his glasses and headset and stared down Angle.
Kurt Angle vs. Robert
Angle beat this guy easily, eventually nailing the Angle Slam and Ankle Lock
for the win. The crowd chanted for Tazz during the match. Angle called this
his warm up for the battle royal.
Everyone started coming out for the battle royal. As Rey Mysterio made his
entrance, Eddie attacked him from behind with a steel chair. Rey was taken
out. Eddie started bleeding somehow from a cut on his nose.
Winner’s Choice Battle Royal
Eddie left the ring after the match started. Paul London, the Cruiserweight
Champion, was the first gone as he was eliminated by Chavo. Funaki was
eliminated next by Angle. Kidman eliminated Mercury. Morgan was on the
outside, saving Carlito a number of times. Akio was eliminated by Booker T,
and Heidenreich eliminated Mark Jindrak. During a commercial break, Nitro
was eliminated. Why would they eliminate the champions so early? Kidman was
eliminated next by Hardcore Holly. Heidenreich was sent out by Kurt Angle.
Scotty was almost eliminated by Chavo and Carlito but he stuck around.
Scotty then eliminated Chavo. Haas was eliminated by Angle and it seemed
Haas might’ve pulled a muscle. Morgan pulled out Scotty and Nunzio and they
were eliminated. Booker then eliminated Carlito. Eddie came into the ring
and eliminated Holly. Rey Mysterio ran out and eliminated Eddie Guerrero.
How is Rey allowed to enter the match now even though he wasn’t in the match
at the start? It’s not a Royal Rumble. Officials had to hold back Mysterio
as Guerrero left. There were six wrestlers left; Both Bashams, Orlando
Jordan, Rey Mysterio, Booker T and Kurt Angle. Mysterio almost eliminated
Jordan but he was saved by Doug Basham. The odds were against Booker and
Mysterio as the heels were working together. Booker fought everyone off at
one point but was taken down by Jordan. Booker made another comeback and
eliminated Danny Basham, Jordan and Doug Basham all within 10 seconds.
Immediately after that, Angle flipped Booker out.
Rey Mysterio and Kurt Angle were the final two, which was the case October
14 in a Smackdown Battle Royal for the Number One contender spot for the US
Title. Mysterio was on Angle early but Kurt grabbed Mysterio and tossed him
across the ring. Angle almost eliminated Mysterio but Rey slipped back in.
Angle hit a vertical suplex. Mysterio almost eliminated Angle twice but
Angle held on. Rey missed a 619 attempt and Angle applied the Ankle Lock.
Rey tapped but it didn’t matter. Angle placed Rey over the top rope and
applied the ankle lock again. Mysterio flipped him over but Angle stayed on
the apron. Both men were on the apron. Angle tried a suplex but Rey reversed
and landed in the ring. Rey tried to bounce Angle out but Kurt slipped under
the bottom rope back in the ring. Angle gained control in the ring but Rey
almost eliminated Angle once again. Rey came off the ropes but Angle hit a
belly to belly suplex. Rey dropped Angle onto the middle rope and hit the
619. Mysterio came off the top but Angle met him mid-air with a low-blow.
Angle grabbed Mysterio and gave him an Angle Slam to the outside. Angle
wins. Kurt said he’s giving John Cena the night off next week. Angle’s
opponent next week would be Sharmell.
