:: Warning :: These Opinions, Thoughts, and Views Don’t Represent This Website. Nor Should They. There Mine, All Mine, And If You Have A Problem With That: I’ve Got Two Words For Ya….I’ll Let You Fill In The Blank
Rambling on. Yes, that’s right. You’ve asked for it. And folks when you ask, I must deliver. You know, I’ve often been told some of my best columns weren’t those written about one hand picked subject, but those about a array of things that match together in ramble. My rambles have become sort of infamous here on this column. And I must say I don’t mind it. After all, any fan who knows me knows I can talk to a blank white wall if given the chance. And this week is a perfect week to do so. There is a lot of things to talk about, and debate about in the world of professional wrestling. So today I won’t remain quiet. I won’t remain caged up like I have been. Today I let it all hang out. My last warning is here, click the X if you don’t like opinion mixed with a F U attitude. Because I don’t play around. This is my opinion. This is me rambling on.
First off, I begin where I always do. John Bradshaw Layfield. I’ve been told to lay off the opinion pieces about him. Well, is this your column? Didn’t think so. Back to business, John Bradshaw Layfield has become a big part of my column, because I appreciate what he’s done. He deserved becoming the longest reigning champion in a decade. He’s been around all ten of those years, and knows the WWE like the back of his hand. So what did WWE do? They rewarded him. And I still to this day believe I was right when I proclaimed him the greatest champion in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment. After all, did Stone Cold Steve Austin do what Layfield did in ten to twelve months? Did Ric Flair ever get to call himself the wrestling god, and get away with it? Has the Hitman or the Heartbreak Kid ever given a promo like he has? No, no, no. Wrestling wise I admit he isn’t the sharpest champion in the box. But, I must also admit the entertainment value he brings into the ring puts him over the top with me and fans. Maybe, I’m wrong. Actually even in the back of my mind I think I could be wrong. Maybe he isn’t the greatest champion ever. I know a lot of you don’t feel that way. I got your complaining e-mails after I wrote that column. But who cares? It’s my opinion piece. I think John Bradshaw Layfield has proven he is the best. And anyone who has doubted him has been wrong. Dead wrong. And even though the fact remains this Sunday at Judgment Day the chances of him winning are slime to none, I think JBL deserves another reign as champion. Another few reigns for that matter.
To me John Bradshaw Layfield is the new most hated heel in wrestling. Triple H has had his fifteen minutes of fame, and for that matter a good reign. But it’s time for him to move on over. Layfield in my eyes, is over the top more then any heel currently on the WWE roster. He should have been champion after WrestleMania 21, and he should be champion today. John Cena hasn’t proven anything. Yeah, he gets huge pops. So what? So did Goldberg a year ago. And most of us, if not all of us, hated Bill Goldberg a year ago. Pops mean a lot when your talking about marks, but I think us wrestling fans know better to rely on pops to tell us if superstars are over or not. In any event, I think Cena has proven himself as a poor champion. He proved that at ‘Mania when he won the title, and the match was extremely short and extremely disappointing on both men’s part. But then again, JBL had been main eventing to perfection for about a year and deserved a free screw up. What kind of champion is John Cena? He’s wrote and made his own rap CD for god sakes. I don’t want this Vanilla Ice wannabe as my champion. If you don’t like Layfield, so be it. Booker T carried Cena through a whole series back in the summer. Kurt Angle hasn’t had the title for a while. Give it to him. Heck, I would rather see Carlito become WWE champion then John Cena. Wait, never mind. That’s not cool.
One more thing that really bothers me is Matt Morgan. A year ago I saw Matt live. It was him and A-Train up against the hot team of Scotty 2 Hotty and Rikishi. Needless to say, narrowing down the match Morgan blew about every spot in the match. He missed a big boot and was 100% to blame, was slow on selling blows, and didn’t show any passion or effort in the ring. So, really, when Vince sent him back to OVW last year I was totally content and happy with that. Then I heard he was returning and I hoped and prayed he went to OVW, and had actually learned to wrestle. After all, I’ve been more impressed with the Tough Enough rejects and Diva Search diva wannabe then I was with Morgan a year ago. And that’s not a exaggerated statement folks, honest to god. Anyway…He came back, and he’s given a new gimmick. Stuttering. Vince McMahon owns a billion dollar company, and all he can do is stuttering. That’s the best his Hollywood writers can do? You have got to be kidding me! Then we see Morgan become a predator, and the Cruiserweights and jobbers of the WWE become prey. Is this TNA wrestling or what? Because I remember I used to complain about all the three minute squashes Monty Brown and Abyss had on Impact. And I remember telling the TNA fans, in defense of the WWE, that WWE isn’t low enough to put their big men against jobbers each and every week. Yet so far that’s exactly what he’s done with his new reign in the WWE. How impressive. YEAH RIGHT! Being monstrous and tall isn’t what I consider potential. Hearing about Luther, a really talented big man, getting fired really gets on my nerves. Especially when stuttering no talent Matt Morgan is being promoted more and more each week. Pathetic!
My buddy Matt Green made a interesting point. While Raw has improved greatly since the start of 2005 mostly staying in the higher three ratings, and a lot of times jumping into the fours. But this weeks Raw got one of the BEST ratings in a few years. A 4.3. Now, a 4.3 may not have been really impressive in 1998 or 1999. But today it is. One significant event of this past weeks’ Raw you may ask? Was it the Gold Rush tournament finals that drew this rating? Some of it. Was it the advertisement of Christian versus Ric Flair, and a tag team match featuring Chris Jericho and Shelton Benjamin? Probably a little bit. But what I’m looking at is the fact that Triple H wasn’t on Raw this past week. Maybe the fans were intrigued to watch Raw when it wasn’t “all about the game”, and frankly wasn’t the Triple H show. Unlike SmackDown as of late, Raw’s been slowly gaining momentum. Is the fact when Triple H isn’t on the show the ratings jump a sign to the WWE? Doubtful. I really doubt, even if it was because Triple H was gone, the McMahon’s wouldn’t stop making it “all about the game” and placing him in the spotlight week after week. I don’t believe that by a long shot. But a interesting notion indeed.
SmackDown has been…well it’s been horrible. This week we find out UPN is moving it from Thursday nights to Friday nights. Friday’s the beginning of the weekend for peep sakes. It’s bad enough SmackDown has to be on UPN, but now there going on Friday’s? Wow. This can’t go well. Especially since the SmackDown product as of late hasn’t been up to par with were we all would like it. John Cena isn’t my champion and isn’t the most deserving carrier of that belt, Matt Morgan is stinking up the place with his horrible stuttering, the cruiserweight division continues to be underutilized, and Kurt Angle is in a Vince Russo-ish feud stalking Booker T’s wife to have “dirty perverted sex.” Where to begin? Brian Gewirtz goes on vacation on Raw, and the ratings go up. Anyone hoping WWE gives the SmackDown creative team first class tickets to Hawaii? I am.
Speaking of pathetic and ridiculous, I want to share a story. A reader wrote me last week asking if I respected Vince McMahon, and if I liked the WWE. Of course so. Are you kidding me? I eat and sleep wrestling. And a lot of my love for wrestling is because of Vince and the WWE. I often get criticized for my opposition to the World Wrestling Entertainment empire. But it’s not because I hate WWE. No, it’s quite the opposite. It’s because I love the WWE, and I want to see it on top. And it’s not on top anymore. The lack of competition has ruined a ’good’ thing when it comes to WWE, and they’ve become utterly ignorant and arrogant. I don’t think their is anything wrong with the internet wrestling community analyzing and debating the WWE and wrestling. Sure, a lot of horrible things have came out of the internet. The internet has spread nasty rumors about wrestlers and wrestling companies that have been untrue, exposed storylines, and has became known for their spoilers of wrestling events. I admit, I eat this stuff up. But those fans on the internet also ask the questions of the WWE we’ve all been asking. They ask of the WWE a product that works for them. And so what? Will WWE probably listen to those fans? Doubtful. But hey, this is wrestling. And any wrestling fan knows the level of dedication most of us have, and they know what we ask these questions. We love this business, we don’t hate it.
You see earlier in this rant I said I thought JBL was the greatest champion ever. I also said I thought Matt Morgan was probably the worst wrestler ever. These are my opinions. And I’m entitled to them. That’s what I think makes this business so great. We as wrestling fans have a lot of different opinions of what we think wrestling should be. Some of us want WWE to go back to the status of the eighties when tradition and honor reigned supreme. Others want a nineties approach where storylines and the words “Sports Entertainment” are the man focal point of Raw and SmackDown! And a lot of wrestling fans are becoming frustrated with the WWE, and following other products like TNA and ROH. I’m a gigantic WWE fan. But I’m easily becoming a TNA fan, and I’m currently a mark for some of the stuff I’m seeing at ROH. Such is life though. This is wrestling. And I think in wrestling your entitled to your own opinion. I have my favorite wrestlers, and you have yours. I have my own opinions of what wrestling should be, and you have yours. I’ve been amazed the amount of e-mails I get from wrestling fans who hate what I say. They question my dedication to wrestling, and frankly ask if I’m a mark. I’m no mark. And I am dedicated and obsessed with wrestling. But this is my opinion. This is how wrestling in my eyes should be. Maybe it’s not your vision, nor is it the way you view wrestlers or wrestling. But hey, this is my column, my opinion, and my vision of wrestling. And my vision is ever becoming more clear and clear day by day by my obsession with the industry. I’m driven by my love of wrestling to ask more of it. WWE can do better. TNA can grow. ROH can compete with TNA and WWE. And so on, and so forth. Open up your minds people, and accept my opinion for more then ten seconds. Agree or disagree. And quite frankly my opinions what’s established me as a successful columnist for about two years now. And it’s my opinion that’s carrying this column to new heights every time I look around. I’m proud of my opinion, and I’m not afraid to hide it. Love me, or hate me this column is mine. Think about that next time you send in your e-mails to me or any other wrestling columnist for that matter. We love wrestling as much as the next guy, we just have a different opinion that continues us rambling on.
Till Next Time…..
Have A Nice Day, The Wright Way!
“No one, and I mean no one has the outspoken attitude I bring to my column. I take pride in saying what I believe, and not caring what people think. If you care what people think, I think that effects your ability as a columnist. Am I controversial? Yes. Do I give you my true honest opinion? Yes.” – Jordon Wright
