At some point yesterday, I was actually going to do one of my RAW Wishes columns. I couldn’t manage to actually go through with it, though, after seeing Triple H begin RAW. Honestly, the first thing I did when I saw Triple H walk out was flip on Hannity & Colmes on the FOX News Channel. Since I didn’t see the first half an hour of RAW, I really can’t comment too much on the show last night…but I can comment on one thing that has been echoing through the arenas lately.
“You Screwed Matt! You Screwed Matt!”
You know that chant. Ever since Matt Hardy got fired from WWE for, apparently, no reason whatsoever, the fans have been on Lita‘s case no matter what the situation. Kane defeats Viscera – the fans chant “You Screwed Matt!” Lita and Kane are out on RAW the night after celebrating – the fans chant “You Screwed Matt!” Lita is out there supporting Kane on RAW last night – the fans chant “You Screwed Matt!”
I’m not going to do one of those faux introspective reports that the kiddies on the internet write about these things, but I do want to make some comments. The first of these comments is to commend the fans. Folks, Lita was completely in the wrong when she cheated on Matt Hardy with Edge and Edge was no better by cheating on his wife with his friend’s girlfriend. I don’t care of it was a drunken mistake or a drug-induced “fun night” – both of these individuals were wrong. And since this is WWE, you know that there won’t be any official comment on what happened (which I agree with). So with that in mind, I commend the fans for letting Lita know – on national television – that what she did was unacceptable.
The second comment that I would like to make is directed at WWE. Guys, I’ve understood and agreed with a lot of your awkward decisions in the past. For some reason you decided to “give” Lex Luger to WCW right before they debuted NITRO and right after you were giving him a huge push with the late British Bulldog as the Allied Powers. Ok – I understood where you were coming from. He sucked in the ring and was going no where. I gotcha.
At some point in the past you failed to successfully renegotiate contracts with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash – and I think that we all know what happened on Memorial Day Weekend in 1996 because of that. Vince was trying to make a statement against the “Kliq” and he was exerting his authority by playing hardball. Vince, I see where you were coming from and you know what? I’ll buy it. Ok. You guys were right on that one too.
You guys continue to shove Triple H down our throats, but when he’s bagging the head writer and he’s the most powerful man in pro wrestling history’s son in law – ok, I can see why you keep shoving him down our throats. I don’t agree with this thought process, but I can see where they would find nothing wrong with it.
But I don’t understand the thinking on this one, WWE. Matt Hardy has an extremely successful character built on Smackdown! Excellent. You bring him over to RAW to have him team up with his girlfriend, Lita; another logical move. You do a stupid heel turn and have him throw Lita away – dumb move, but par for the WWE course. Now, when you have an opportunity to let Matt Hardy return to television and become the future champion that he can be…you let him go?
I guess I don’t understand why WWE did this because of who got left behind. Lita got left behind, but that doesn’t make much sense. She’s probably the most injury-prone female wrestler in recent history and she’s not even “over” any more with the fans (and this takes into account her pre-“You Screwed Matt!” days). Considering that one of the top two women wrestlers in the company who is still wrestling just asked for her release a few weeks ago, I just find it odd that WWE is sticking with Lita. Note: That was a reference to Molly Holly leaving – the other best women’s wrestler is obviously Ivory, who doesn’t even wrestle any more.
And Edge is left behind…why? A few years ago I was 110% behind Edge and pushing him to the moon. However, he just doesn’t have “it.” I don’t know what that “it” is. It’s the stuff that makes the fans go crazy when Shawn Michaels comes out. It’s the stuff that makes people cheer Viscera these days (and if you can figure out that whole situation, you let me know). It’s the thing that makes John Cena the superstar that he is…it’s the “it” factor. Edge doesn’t have it. I don’t know why he’s continually being pushed when he just doesn’t have it. He was no good as a face and he’s no good as a heel. Granted, I expect him to be headlining PPVs in the coming years, but that’s not because he was put there by fan approval – I think it’s more WWE wanting a return on their investment.
But I ramble…
My final comment on this issue is to Matt Hardy. Dude, you’re alright. You’ve been handed a shitty stick and you didn’t respond by going off on a tirade everyday since it happened. Yeah, you’re in a bad situation, but you’ve got that “it” factor that Edge never had; you’ve got the certain something that will make you a star in ROH or TNA or wherever it is that you wind up!
